Terrain maps
Terrain maps
Some little time ago I read a post which queried why the poster could not trigger a certain repeater.
The ham was in the Diamond Valley somewhere and could not trigger a repeater on Mt Dandenong.
A helpful forumite posted a map of the path in cross section showing terrain heights etc (and the reason why the repeater was inaccessable)
Does anyone know what that app is and how do I access it?
I have had a look on the forum but cannot find it. I am peobably looking in the wrong place as usual

Re: Terrain maps
If it's a LOS path and curvature of the earth isn't an issue, then have you considered using the Mapping page of VK Logger?
It can provide a quick n dirty picture.
Terrain data comes from Google elevation data.
Click on one point, set that as the origin, then tick the box to enable terrain profiling, then on subsequent clicks you will see the terrain profile on each click.
It doesn't get any easier than that!
Being clever by using a combination of the "Locate xxx", you can search for the specific callsign of an operator in the VK Logger database (then set that as the origin), then search for a specific repeater callsign in the repeater database.
You may have missed the help video on the Mapping.
On-line tools such as radio mobile will do the job better, and take earth's curvature into account.

Re: Terrain maps
Hey Nev there is also a program called Radio Mobile which can be used to predict the signal strength of a signal over a path. It can be found here
http://www.cplus.org/rmw/english1.html
I dont know much about it but on a recent rally the organizer of the radio stuff used it to work out what path loss there would be between various repeaters and our locations etc.

Re: Terrain maps
As others have noted, the program that I used to create that original plot to the ATV Repeater is Radio Mobile Online by VE2DBE, which you can access here: http://www.cplus.org/rmw/rmonline.htmlVK3LU wrote: I'll check out the prog that produced it.

Thanks Ralph,
Looks interesting. I will try a few plots to see the viability of VHF from my QTH.
