What new bands should we ask for?

The QRM will get much worse when the we reach the part of the sunspot cycle and 80m ham signals from ZL and the USA (both of which allow 1KW of power) start roaring in, bearing in mind they are entitled to be there because 3.7-4.0MHZ is a ITU allocated amateur band.

Having emergency services operating within an ITU allocated amateur band is a VK anomaly and totally .

80m: 3500 to 3900 kHz.
60m: 5250 to 5450 kHz.
6m: 50.000 to 54.000 MHz exclusive primary.
32cm 921 to 929 MHz - up to 100W EIRP.
Retain 2300 to 2302 MHz.
Retain 3300 to 3410 MHz.
Seek primary on bands above 5650 MHz.

Guys (including me), before posting new content on this older thread please read carefully the pages of past postings or we will keep on re-visiting topics that have been done over already. In particular look at previous postings on the possibility of getting a 5MHz allocation and the arguments against such a proposal.

Also note that there is a new LCD, the whole issue of spectrum allocation is being revised and the role, and even the existence of the ACMA, is being debated by the government. This means that any changes to our bands, apart from those in the new LCD (9cm and 6m), are going to be a long wait.

In the meantime lets get stuck in and increase the usage of the bands we currently have

out of all them bands, the one i would love to see the most is 60m, i use 5mhz on RFDS and also during my involvement with my local SES as Communications Operator.

That is the reason why we are very unlikely to get a 5MHZ ham allocation in VK. In this region, in particular PNG, and Solomon Islands, 5MHz is chock full of public safety, medical networks (including some that monitor emergency channels 24/7) and government communications. The danger of interference to vital services is just too great, especially in northern VK and more so at night and other stakeholders would rigorously oppose such an application.

The best we can hope for is a couple of narrow band spots for low power data only.

Just a simple channel allocation like they have overseas would be good enough I believe, and what you mentioned would be the reason why so far we don't have any allocation there as of yet, but then again I think it is still ping through the ITU.

To be honest I am not entirely sure but it says it can't exceed 10khz

I'm firmly in the "let's make more use the bands we already have" camp.

Definitely agree about using existing allocations more. A new amateur band can spread existing amateurs thinner over more MHz,
though to the extent where it renews interest amongst inactive hams it can be beneficial.

Notwithstanding the local noise that some people have, I'm a great fan of the LIPD allocations and the distances possible.

Of these the most promising appear to be the segments around 13.5 MHz, 30 - 40 MHz, 70 MHz and 151 MHz. Even 433 MHz,
with a lower RF power limit, can give reasonable distances if you put the transmitter on top of a squid pole.

100mW of WSPR around 13.5 MHz should be copiable thousands of km away. That same power to a unity gain antenna in the
VHF range on SSB can do at least 5km, with a bit of height giving several tens of km coverage. LIPDs provide more opportunities
for Foundation licensees to experiment than their restrictive conditions with regard to digital modes and homebrew gear.

I have got down to Orange in NSW on 13.5mhz using a CW beacon and also in 40.7mhz managed to get to Townsville when 6m opened up

If I had to request more spectrum........I think 70mhz (as per Europe)would be a much better choice than 40mhz.
There are already plenty of beacons on 10 and 6mtrs, in fact plenty on all bands from 20mtrs to 6mtrs to give a clear indication of MUF and Propagation paths.
There is plenty of ex commercial gear for midband VHF around and the IC7100 (and probably others) is sold in other markets with this band working, but Id imagine the trouble here in VK would be co-existing with the pmr users of this part of the spectrum.
