Well the Redcliffe Club is gradually rising to the occasion.

I've got some support for Friday's set-up and we had the caravan packed on Monday night, ready and raring to go (thanks to 4EA). This year is going to be somewhat quieter (at least until the esky gets opened on Saturday night) from a radio point of view, that is. We're only running four HF bands - ditching 15m as a waste of time - and only using dipoles. No beams this year, 100 watts barefoot...and no camp oven cook-up. Back to basics for portable operation...did I mention I was bringing the camper trailer? Can't be too "basic".

What we are doing differently is encouraging those who do turn up to bring their own rigs with them and give them a bash in a field environment. You know what it's like - people come along, get on an unfamiliar rig and buggerize around with the settings until nothing works properly. This way, they know how to operate the gear and get a taste for using their own stuff portable.

We'll see how it works.

Either way, I intend on approaching the weekend in a positive manner. In the last few months our Monday night average age of attendees has dropped dramatically, due to our proactive training and assessment team. As a result our new members are keen to see the field station in action, even in it's minimalist form.

I'm munching on rock salt to develop my thirst for the great Sat night around the campfire, who's joining us?

Hi all the VK2BOZ/P team will be active on HF - 23cm maybe 13cm as well in QF48XG. Hoping for a cooler change in the weather as it is suppose to be 39 Deg up here.

Its a new site and we are seeing how it holds up for VHF to the south & South west.

Cheers

I think thats a great idea and they spend less time setting up and sorting the radio . just plug theirs in and away they go. it will be a good test for most to see how quick they can set up.
good luck have fun

The Amateur Radio Experimenters Group and the Elizabeth Amateur Radio Club will join forces to enter this year’s John Moyle Field Day from the Para Wirra Recreation Park activating the special callsign VK5WIA as a multi-phone HF station. Four stations will be setup operating on 80m/160m, 40m, 20m and 15m/10m with a mix of Hex beams, Spider beams and wire antennas in use. For more information please visit http://www.areg.org.au/?p=932. Good luck to all entrants and we look forward to hearing you on the air.

Hi all

VK5ZT will be portable at the Snowtown Windfarm PF96BC

Operating 1.8 Mhz through to 24 Ghz.

Also running 2 experiments. A 600 metre WSPR beacon on a very long wire antenna will be running during the contest. Also testing a red Phlatlight based optical transmitter back towards the city.

Cheers

Great stuff! The time lapse makes it more interesting. :)

I liked it where, at about 1:20, the two guys pray before putting the antenna on the mast.

Found an old log book the other day. Browsing through, I found entries for a field day contest over 6-7 February 1965. Was that a John Moyle FD?

I had 6m and 2m, running maybe 10 watts AM, crystal-locked on each band, with a tuneable IF. I recall I had a 3-element Yagi on 6m and a 5-element Yagi on 2m.

Here's the first page from the log.

For those with good recall, that first contact - VK3YS/P - was with Fred Bail, the Yaesu agent. That third contact - with VK3ABA - was Fred's brother, Jim. Both SK. Many callsigns in the six pages of that log are now SK, also. However, some 'survivors', too. :)

It was indeed. Rules at http://armag.vk6uu.id.au/1964-december-AR.html

Some things remain the same (nearly everyone was 59) while others have changed (use of now obscure Q-codes even by non-Morse operators)

Then there was the 7 month wait for the results - but in your case it was worth it! http://armag.vk6uu.id.au/1965-september-AR.html

On following pages of the log, there are some variations in signal reports: 56, 57, 58 - even a 45 !

In the April 1964 issue of AR magazine, there appeared a seminal article on "How to Win a Contest", which was highly amusing at the time and remains so. Worth reading:

I did a 2M Single band 6 Hr stint as vk2nh using a 4 el yagi. from QF56. My best contact was with vk3er 669km with a solid 57 both ways. Pleasing result from a small setup.
