10 GHz World Record

Post by VK7MO »

On 5 January there was a nice tropo opening across the Great Australian Bight which resulted in the following QSOs

VK6DZ to VK5KK 1902 km JT4f -14, -15 dB
VK6DZ to VK5DK 2087 km SSB 5/2, 5/7
VK6DZ to VK7MO portable Cape Portland 2732 km JT4f -15, -16 dB peaked later at -12 dB also SSB at 5/1, 3/1

The 2732 km contact is a new World Record exceeding the previous World Record of 2696 km from Southern Portugal to Cape Verde Island by 36 km.

The Hepburn Chart (attached) at the time indicated enhanced but not spectacular conditions.

Totally gobsmacking, Rex and Derek. 8)

Australian microwavers taking it up to the rest of the world. Punching above our (collective) weight.

I expect to sit spellbound and enchanted as you recount the story at GippsTech 2015, Rex.

Rex and Derek,

Congratulations, a sensational achievement.

To put this in context, the previous national record and at at one time world record, was between VK5NY/5 and VK6KZ/6 achieved on 30/12/94 at a distance of 1912.1.
The fact that this national record has stood for so long is a testament to the difficulty. Further considering that in 1994, there was no such thing as GPS locking, it just shows as Roger has said "Punching above our (collective) weight", and we continue to do so.

makes my works 2.5Ghz 150km Tropo microwave link seem like a "local" contact. though we are sending a bit more than JT4f across it :)
