[Melbourne] QRP by the Bay - Sat Nov 8, 2014

Post by VK3YE »

An event for those who like homebrew portable radio equipment, outdoors transmitting and QRP operating.

Format: Informal gathering. Bring yourself and any QRP related projects, equipment, antenna or accessories.

Suggested theme: Show, tell, demonstrate portable QRP DX antennas. Spread out along the beach, put up an antenna and work DX. 14 & 21 MHz.

Location: Gather in Victory Park, Camp St, Chelsea. Grassed area near life saving club. If you don’t find us there walk south along the beach, looking for stations we’ve set up (the antennas should be visible!).

Venue & facilities: By the bay 30km south of Melbourne. Grassed areas near water. Free barbecues and shelter if wet. Playground for children.

For those who haven't been before, here's a great write-up on last year's by Andrew VK3BQ http://www.vk3bq.com/2013/11/10/qrp-by-the-bay-day/

So far some good early interest.

The Facebook page has been opened up so anyone (even if not on Facebook) can view.

Use this link instead of the one above: https://www.facebook.com/events/287817648076248/

Between now and November 8 I'll post links to informative websites and videos specifically on beach portable and pedestrian mobile HF DX antennas.

Continued good interest, and really looking forward to it.

Set up a station or just drop by, QRP by the Bay is on today!

Today's weather will be a mixture, with a hot morning followed by a cool, gusty change.

You may have to accept a less ambitious but more robust antenna. The safety of other beach patrons
is imperative, so no trippable guy wires please. Also please spread out along the sand and stay out of peoples
way (eg along the fence). You will get people asking what you do - answering them is more important
than continuing a QSO if there's a clash.

These and more tips at the Facebook link above.

It's split. Made from an aluminium egg ring (from an op shop) with a slit to allow it to be put on. A velcro tie keeps it firm.

It was a great event with a fantastic attendance (nearly 30). Amateurs were in the area from before 11am until after 7pm.

The following videos give some highlights:

* Morning 160m activity https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FugbfjeNB68

* QRP by the Bay https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7MljuBAG5Y

Thanks to those who made it a success, especially those who travelled from the country. Next one will be early February.
