Aluminium boxes

Post by VK4KL »

Anyone know where I can get an aluminium box similar to the one that the VK Power Master was built into?

There's not many really good project cases around any more, especially if you want some thing robust and spacious. Jaycar sell a reasonably sized case but it won't take much of a beating especially if you're moving it around continuously. Perhaps you could post the required dimensions?

Was in Jaycar at Caboolture on Sunday the most unhelpful mob I've ever dealt with.
No suitable boxes in stock and was unsure when they would have any.
Bought enough components to build a power supply and when I got home (150k away) not all parts I paid for were in the bag. Called them and no parts left on counter. Fellow that served me couldn't find all the components I needed and my wife found the parts while I talked about project boxes.
What ever happened to good old fashioned service?

Adrian

Ps box I need is 14x10x8 inchs approx

These days, most cases i see / use are based around the 19 inch rack design. Jaycar do sell them but you may find them cheaper somewhere on the internet.
Only issue is that these wont have the height required as even a 3RU one is only about 130mm high.

1RU --> http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=HB5120

2RU --> http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=HB5125

3RU --> http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=HB5130

They come in both Metal and ABS Plastic.

Cheers.

Find your local aluminum seller ( I'm not talking Bunnings etc, somebody like Capral or whatever they call themselves these days) and ask for referrals to engineering places that might bend up the ally.

You may get lucky and find a place that will do it for a reasonable price.

I used to have one in Adelaide, but they've shut up shop now.

Alternatively, make a bending brake and make them yourself. I will have to do that in the not to distant future.

I encountered a similar problem when I needed and enclosure for a 3.4GHz transverter.
The options are (a) limited and (b) expensive.

I settled for a $15 toolbox from Bunnings (not aluminium, but I didn't care).
