Amateur Microwave Bands in UK Reduced

Post by VK2ZRH »

UK amateurs will lose access to significant sections of the 2310-2450 MHz and 3400-3475 MHz bands, the British regulator, Ofcom, announced on 7 April 2014. :(

Ofcom plans to allocate 2350 to 2390 MHz and 3410 to 3475 MHz for what it calls "new civil uses" (read - mobile data access for tablets and smartphones).

UK amateurs will retain access to the adjacent bands, according to the regulator, but it has implemented procedures to remove even those frequencies from amateur radio access in the future, if necessary.

In a burst of uncharacteristic generosity, Ofcom said 2300-2302 MHz will be made available for amateur use through a Notice of Variation to licences.

See the RSGB's announcement here: http://rsgb.org/main/blog/news/rsgb-not ... m-release/

In Australia, the 2300-2302 MHz band is under threat from a spectrum licence allocation proposed by the ACMA. The WIA advocates retention of a 150 kHz segment, from 2300-2300.15 MHz. See: http://www.wia.org.au/newsevents/news/2 ... /index.php

Get out there and activate our microwave bands!

Put on as many beacons as humanly possible.
