LDF4-50 Connectors

Post by VK4KL »

Anybody know where I can get connectors to go on LDF4-50 Heliax? Preferably in Australia.
Can get them off eBay at a reasonable price but one guy wants $100 postage for one

Radio Specialist in Adelaide
http://www.radiospecialists.com.au/cata ... cts_id=373
(Their new hybrid website with a shopping cart now is bloody awful)
Contact details from the main URL: http://www.radiospecialists.com.au/
Good to deal with though. I've always placed orders over the phone with CC details.

RF Shop, near me, in the Brisbane burbs!
(Was there today getting some connectors :D )
http://www.rfshop.com.au/Store/tabid/63 ... rew+Heliax
Also great to deal with.

Minikits don't appear to stock conns for LDF4-50.

Adrian what brand is your Heliax? Andrew Corporation for example, used a helically spiral shaped solid copper earth sheath where as some other manufacturers used parallel ribbed copper earth sheath. A good connector will suit the solid copper earth profile. I am pretty sure the Andrew stuff has changed profile now and the new connectors don't fit the old heliax.

The rfshop.com.au..... Not original Andrews connectors, but at $12.95 (incl tax) male and $15.07 (incl tax) female well worth it. Used them here on the 2, 70, 23 runs of LDF4-50!

LDF4-50 has a corrugated copper outer where as SFJ4-50 has spiral copper corrugated outer conductor.
Different connectors for both.
The SFJ4-50 ones normally screw on and the LDF ones have a collar that fits over the outer copper conductor.
I know this because I now have a small collection of nice new connectors for the wrong coax

FSJ-450 is like a screw thread and LDF-450 has parallel ridges perpendicular to the center conductor.
Andrews makes both types and the connectors are not interchangeable.

The Huber and suhner connectors are the best.

I contacted Huber and Suhner in Sydney and told them I am a Ham.

They sold me connectors that fitted 4-50 fine.

Have a look at their website.

They used to be common at field days. I used to sell them second hand for $5 a pop.
I'd buy them from the scrap metal dealers for their weight in copper ($7/kg) and I'd tell the scrap metal dealers they were made from steel so they were getting a good deal.
These days the supply of second hand LDF4 connectors has dried up. Even RFS LCF12-50 connectors have become scarce.

RFS connectors work on both RFS and Andrew cables, but Andrew connectors only work on Andrew cable.
Search the scrap metal yards for heliax cable and chances are they'll still have connectors on them.

Ah, I just found a box with a whole heap of old FSJ4-50 connectors today. Somebody has dumped them in a bin.
Lucky I rescued them

Ash

Can you find a box of connectors for fsj2/50? I bought some of the cable but have no connectors for it yet.

yep... I know where I can find LDF2-50 connectors too.
They're getting rarer too, but the scrap metal dealers still collect them for me.
They usually leave them on the cable, so they tend to come in pairs.
Supply is still a bit sporadic, I usually hoard them until I need some petrol money to attend a field day.

Just remind me every now and then via any communication means you like and I'll find a way to get them too you.
