Don't think I've mentioned it on the forums before but im 14 therefore they arent "drinking vouchers" for me
Well done Andrew.
Being in your teens certainly changes things... I guess we wrongly assume most new hams will be a bit older.
Good on you for getting a ham license.

The IC-718 will be just fine, and you will get lots of enjoyment out of it.
Chasing all those new countries will soon begin!

Gday Andrew.
I have had my 718 for a few years now.
I purchased it second hand .
The only issue I have had ,is the Audio gain control is a bit touchy .
When I have It turned down low ,and then turn it up a little there is a sudden jump in volume level.
I have taken the radio apart to try to fix or clean the pot ,but it is sealed.
A few others have had this problem but not many.
When using the rig on 80m and 40 m ,you can turn the Att on and use the RF gain control to cut back the noise level, then turn the Audio gain up. the IF shift control can also be useful on crowded bands.
The radio will last for years and will serve you well.
Enjoy the Hobby and welcome.
Brendan.

Brendan - why not wire in an 8 ohm / 6 or 10 dB pi attenuator between the ext speaker socket and an external speaker or headphones as a workaround? It won't fix the sudden jump but it will be at a much lower level and adjustment should be much smoother around normal listening volumes. All it needs is 3 x 1 watt resistors and connectors.

Even better is put it in a box that can also switch in some RF chokes and capacitors to form audio band pass filters to cut out hash. Maybe combine with the external speaker itself, eg salvaged from a small stereo or 1980s ghetto blaster (the big ones with detachable speakers).
