Life in the Old Sol, yet

Post by VK2ZRH »

From http://www.spaceweather.com

POSSIBLE CME IMPACT ON MAY 17:
A coronal mass ejection (CME) hurled into space by the X1-flare of May 15th might deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field on May 17th. NOAA forecasters estimate a 40% chance of polar geomagnetic storms when the cloud arrives. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras tonight.

That sounded remarkably familiar Roger having just read Spaceweather dot com a few minutes ago HI.

My Ionoprobe software is showing an M2.6 X-ray flux flare right now, and has had high proton flux for the past day and a half.

I'm keeping an eye on the Kiruna magnetometer online and watching for anything happening.

K7RA, reports: on May 16 the daily sunspot number reached 212.
had to keep searching further and further back in the records to find a higher sunspot number.
One year, six months and one week earlier -- November 9, 2011 -- the sunspot number was almost that high, at 208. Going back seven years, 10 months and 12 days to July 4, 2005, it was 192.
To find activity beating the May 16 number, we have to go back nearly a decade to November 1, 2003 when the daily sunspot number was 277.
-- nine years, six months and 15 days earlier than our recent high number.

The resultant band opening to VK8 was 11.25 years from the similar events into VK of FEB 2002
which in turn was 11.25 years from similar events of DEC 1991 to Feb 1992.

Being late in May it matched similar conditions reported by VK6JQ in April May 2002 and 1992 and VK8XI April 2003

Time will tell if this october thru Feb 2014 will favour other regions of Australia.
