FT-1000MP Display Fault
I've finally lost patience with the ever increasing display error on my FT-1000MP. As seen in the attached images, the fluorescent display now maintains illuminated segments, making reading sub-VFO frequency and the main meters next to impossible.
Sub-VFO
Main meters
Full display
I've used/seen other FT-1000MPs that have had the same fault... but am yet to find documentation about the fault that describes the possible cause and suitable fixes.
Any suggestions?

Re: FT-1000MP Display Fault
Do you want a lend of my Ft1000Mp to check the voltages ? the display on it is perfect...

It looks a lot like one (or more ) or the LC75821E multiplexer display driver chips is not actually switching off. There are 4 of these 64 pin QFP chips soldered onto the display board and it is not real obvious which one drives those particular segments. By the same token, it could actually be the display failing so a temporary swap-over of the display board from a known good one would confirm which is the problem. That, in itself, will not be simple due to the construction....
You will be able to source a replacement part from Vertex Australia (once diagnosed) but it could take up to 6-8 weeks for them to get it in from Japan if they don't have one in local stock. The
I have a copy of the FT1000MP Tech Supplement as a 113MB PDF if you don't already have it.
An interesting point is that the LC75821E was manufactured as an LCD display driver chip - not a fluorescent... and the 1000MP parts list describes DS5501 (the main display) as an LCD display. Is it really an LCD display that just looks like a fluorescent ???

Re: FT-1000MP Display Fault
Doug - I don't have a Tech Supp that large... I have a scanned version of a 40 page document about 4MB! So if there's an easy way to get a copy it would be appreciated.
Fluorescent or LCD... LCD, but multicoloured
Time not an issue... it's been progressively failing for more than two years, but has now deteriorated to the point where I can not provide a signal report (besides in contests ) and the sub-VFO freq is indeterminable, meaning I avoid using it!

Re: FT-1000MP Display Fault
Dear Scott,
as I'm suffering a similar problem on my FT-1000MP, just affecting the digits of the sub receiver (the Christmas Tree Test addresses all the LCD segments, but showing different patterns compared with the center display sequences), I'm wondering how did you get solved your case.
We see exchange of CD ROM with schematics, and I do have 'em, but I'd like to know how was solved the failure.
I'm trying to get the display board from Vertex UK, but I suspectthere could be only false contacts somewhere, or one or two multiplexer drivers as the other operator commented.
Any help will be much appreciated !!!
/With mybest regards

Roberto
Through some help, I obtained a new display board from Yaesu USA. From other threads here I've read that Yaesu (Vertex) UK are also very good in supporting the supply of parts.
Cheers

Re: FT-1000MP Display Fault
Hi Scott and Roberto,
I have an FT990 that had some difficult to find faults. Through a Yahoo group, I found a very helpful and knowledgable tach in Wales (yes, Wales UK!) and ended up sending the boards to him and he fixed it all. Yes, it cost me and the postage with a PA heatsink was steep.
His name is Geoff GW4AQU, from Castle Electronics (email geoff.castle@ymail.com ). He is very busy with his commercial work, but does work for Yaesu UK and others. Apparently good RF techs are thin on the ground over there as they are out here.
Cheers,
John

Re: FT-1000MP Display Fault
Hi there !
many thanks to both Scott and John. I'm trying infact to get a new Display board from yaesu, but Ihad not tried UK Vertex yet. The official channel here in Italy was failing the search in EU/HongKong stock.
The first step anyway will be trying to see if any bad/heat proven solder joint could be found....weak hope, but still hopeful.
Many thanks for the info, and my best 73 from sunny (at least today, even if we have 4°C) Milano-Italy
