Back to Basics: What is a VNA / Vector Network Analyzer
From Alan, W2AEW This video presents the basic definition of a vector network analyzer (VNA), a practical view of how some of the measurements are performed, and an introduction to some of the common measurements that are made. A few examples VNAs are shown. Knowledge of transmission lines, reflecti...

Re: Satellite 2-23-70 Crossboom separation?
FYI, regarding separation I contacted m2, and this was the response; Hello Adam, Recommended spacing for 2/70CM is 11’ on a non-conductive cross boom, https://www.m2inc.com/FGCB60 unless you mount them vertically polarized. You will to change the feed so that the cables exit to the rear and support ...

How to navigate SATPC32 for new users
From VA3MW, published April 5, 2020. This video assumes: Your Radio(s) and Rotator(s) are already communicating with SATPC32. I did this for those new operators who can't seem to figure out the workflow on SATpc32 and to make their first hands-free (ish) QSO. JLdROrcY7fY https://www.youtube.com/watc...

Yaesu G-5500 replacement?
I'm considering options for AZ/EL control of yagis. The Yaesu G-5500 AZ/EL or G-550 (EL only) naturally come to mind. https://www.yaesu.com/ProductImages/G-5500_thumb.jpg I contacted a retailer about them and the reply was; The G-550 and G-5500 are no longer available from Yaesu . I think they have ...

Thanks for that Ian.
Next trick is to find suitable length(s) of fibreglass tube.
I was looking at re-purposing my extendable paint roller pole, but only the outer tube is fibreglass, with the inner being aluminium.

Re: Icom IC-9700 users topic
I remember with the IC-910, it was easy to accidentally leave the speech compressor on when switching from SSB to operate on FM.
Naturally, it sounded over-driven, compressed, and generally awful on FM.
That can't happen on the IC-9700, because the speech compressor is disabled on FM, as it should be.

Re: Icom IC-9700 users topic
There have been some moans about it from the UK posted elsewhere; I use mine for satellite work. You can always tell when someone is using a 9700 because the audio sounds ‘robotic’ and ‘digital’ and lacking in personality. What ever you do with tone controls etc have no bearing on the sound. Many op...

Satellite 2-23-70 Crossboom separation?
Hi all Just wondering what others suggest for separation of horizontally polarised 2m, 23cm and 70cm yagis mounted on a non-conductive crossboom? I will initially re-purpose my existing terrestrial antennas, all M2 (2M12, 432EME12 and a 23CM35) for satellite use and preset them to a fixed elevation ...

Re: WIA Contest Champion and the Ross Hull Contest
Trent, I can't help, but quote myself. From over 7 years ago, and the relevant parts are bold. From what I recall of other discussions about this in the dim dark past, one of the factors taken into consideration for the scheduling of the Summer Field Day is a hope of catching an Es outbreak - sorry,...

Zoom - Security Warning
I work at a University, and whilst I'm still going into our Media facility occasionally, we primarily use Zoom to conduct video conferencing when in WFH (Working From Home) mode. Our staff were warned about security risks associated with Zoom several weeks ago, so it's probably timely to share some ...

eBay anti-gouging and Isopropyl Alcohol rip offs
Too bad if you need some IPA for PCB and general electronics work at the moment. The opportunistic vultures have come out and are flogging IPA for ridiculous amounts right now. Ripoff-merchant.JPG $1450. Free freight. how kind of them. Whereas the normal price for a 20 litre drum is $263 + a small p...

Car battery warranty with stop/start
Replacing the car battery today after 4 years, so that was a good run!!! (It was a Repco branded N70ZZ4WD if you were wondering, which is a re-badged Century) 20200330_1559_1200.jpg The new battery, a Century N70ZZXMF, has a warranty condition I hadn't noticed before on car batteries. 20200330_15584...

10 Hints to Minimize Noise Figure Uncertainties
Received from Keysight today, and FYI. " Noise figure—a fundamental RF measurement—is critical for assessing the receiver's ability to detect weak, incoming signals in the presence of self-generated noise. Reducing noise figure begins with a solid understanding of the uncertainties in your comp...

Re: IC-410PRO AF out on mic socket
Hi Rob I actually started looking at the Accessory socket on the main board when I learnt that the EPTT signal on that connector could be configured (with the normal consumer version of CS-410 #01) to get around the TOT (Time Out Timer). As it turned out, I got a copy of the Dealer version of the pr...

IC-410PRO AF out on mic socket
An Icom IC-410PRO UHF transceiver is being interfaced via it's RJ-45 microphone connector to a Clear-Com intercom system via a TW-47. Audio Out is required on the RJ-45 mic connector, but; a) It doesn't appear there by default b) the IC-410PRO Service Manual is unobtainium, so try finding the solder...

Learning about a Mixed Signal Oscilloscope (MSO)
Another informative read from Keysight (formerly HP, then Agilent) this week. Introduction Today’s embedded designs based on microcontrollers (MCUs), FPGAs, and digital signal processors (DSPs) often include a combination of analog and digital signal content. Design engineers have traditionally used...
