Re: License Issue Timescales

The delay is in the frequency assignment process in ACMA, not in the licensing.

Re: License Issue Timescales

Simple solution... deregulate licensing all together and give the WIA a link into the ACMA database. There shouldn't be two steps in the process. WIA manages the callsign database and collects the license fee on ACMA's behalf... one step. In return the WIA receives an admin fee (out of the $80) for ...

Re: License Issue Timescales

But the whole complaint looks a bit dodgy based on: - I waited until Monday and went to the post office, got a money order ($6 charge!) and sent it off at the same time with the callsign recommendation. - I waited another week - nothing. - The following Thursday I appeared as a client in the databas...

Re: License Issue Timescales

Nik, The issue is that amateur repeater applications go through an ACMA assigner- that is where the delay is because ACMA don't want to fund this service. The poor engineers in Canberra doing this deserve a medal... There is nothing stopping you or anyone else from using an ACMA "accredited per...

Re: UK adds 1 MHz to 2m band

If I was in the UK I wouldn't get too excited... the proposal makes it very clear that this is a temporary arrangement until such time as a more appropriate user is identified. Submissions seeking a permanent expansion were rejected.

Re: Telstra complains of QRM!

I had a moron from Optus call me the other day... made accusations of interference based on the ACMA database list of assignments rather than using his test equipment. He had no understanding of intermod... I told him to provide me with real evidence before I committed tax payer money to travel 800k...

Have you asked the WIA Brendan? The question has been asked before and the costs are all accounted for.

Looks a lot like a "Crown" rotator Ben... very popular for TV antennas around 1970-1980.

Re: Dick smith rotator CAT D-5003

Ben, Are you referring to the KR-400? They were produced under a number of different names. I have one here that I bought from DSE back in about 1980... just gave it a complete strip down and service about a year ago & it is like new. Here is a link to one source of info: http://www.w4rp.com/KR4...

Re: Antenna opinions and suggestions (started with Tak-tenna

Peter, have you tried lightweight braided stainless steel? I purchased 100m of 1.2mm braid (7x7) to make a field day 160m dipole and I've found this wire to be excellent. It is very light, wound onto two small fishing reels it takes up very little space and is very hard to kink. I paid about $32 shi...

Re: Exam / Licence Price & Young People ..

Of course I would... but people need to demonstrate some initiative too. Donating equipment to those who only hold their hand out for everything for nothing only feeds EBay... I recently came across someone who kept complaining how he was being discriminated against because he was a Standard call, a...

Re: Exam / Licence Price & Young People ..

I never said it does... but it is curious how those who focus on the social aspects ignore the technical... I clearly mix in different circles to you because those who I tend to meet get enormous enjoyment out of the technical aspects rather than the social. That doesn't mean much, it just shows the...

Re: Exam / Licence Price & Young People ..

Is the elephant big or is it an animal? It's both. Clearly it's similar in AR, one that encompasses technical, social, recreation amongst many others objectives. Anyone trying to cast this or many other pursuits in life with a narrow definition is just losing the perspective. Strange... amateur rad...

Re: Exam / Licence Price & Young People ..

This may not seem like a big deal for all youse flash city blokes on the North Shore in your shiny suits and your BMW's, but in the bush this cost is an absolute show stopper. I would suggest that AR is doing itself long term harm by following this high cost of entry road. Sorry, but that is just i...

Re: Exam / Licence Price & Young People ..

I'm sorry but while there is an important social aspect to the hobby, it is not a "social hobby"- it is a "technical hobby" and it is time some people woke up to that. If you want a social radio hobby go and buy a CB.... that is what it was created for. We only have access to our...

Re: Exam / Licence Price & Young People ..

Has their model "worked"? Do you mean that it has worked in terms of boosting license numbers? But has it had other adverse impacts that you aren't considering? Such as service levels... The ACMA are under the pump to recover their costs and if amateurs want to move to a low or no cost mod...

Very unlikely... unless they do a site audit.

The new DRAFT WIA Repeater and Beacon Policy is now up on the WIA website- hopefully this will help to clear up any issues.

Re: Meaning of mast and self-assessable

Hi Trent, I don't believe they are extreme. For example the Police tech who spent many many hours with his butt only immediately above an active (transmitting) antenna. The transmitter was 25W. What that emphasises is how it doesn't take anywhere near 400W, it is a cumulative effect. The second fact...

Re: Meaning of mast and self-assessable

Read what I wrote and what VK3ZTE wrote... I gave an example of broadcast riggers complaining of eye & headache problems. Testicular cancer was what the police tech contracted. Don't you think going blind or contracting testicular cancer is a serious issue Rob? So all VK3ZTE did was confirm what...
