Re: F-Call thoughts
Questioning whether some F calls are breaking the 10W limit does nothing to assist your argument. It does the opposite. And going a step further by bringing Advanced calls into it only makes it worse. There will always be people who break rules- changing the rules to suit them is daft. Rather than a...

Re: F-Call thoughts
On what basis do you believe that a person who has a Foundation class demonstrated the knowledge to safely operate a 100W transmitter? What I think is irrelevant. What ACMA thinks IS. EMR is a serious issue to the ACMA and given society's sensitivity to the hazards of relatively high levels of EMR g...

Re: DSTAR Vs C4FM Vote
A fellow ham who works at Tait in Christchurch told me today that a 70cm DMR network is being rolled out for their equivalent of WICEN... ease of networking & access to cheap radio equipment were behind this.

Re: DSTAR Vs C4FM Vote
"Default to the commercial radio market" eh? What sanctimonious twaddle. No. That is just plain BS. Amateurs are supposed to be curious, wanting to learn, and given I spend much of my life around P25 I want to learn what the next big thing in radio is all about. Whether you want to look do...

Re: Repeater application process
There is always an option if you don't wish to wait- pay an "Approved Person" to carry out the frequency assignment work. My employer can get licenses through an AP in a few weeks- but you have to pay and it isn't cheap. Otherwise sit back and enjoy the wait... there is nothing that the WI...

Re: DSTAR Vs C4FM Vote
Whatever rocks your boat... if you want to play DSTAR then go for it... But I'm sorry if you think DSTAR is the future of Ham radio because it has all the hallmarks of being a Betacam all over again. Whether you like it or not AR is significantly influenced by developments in the commercial radio in...

Re: DSTAR Vs C4FM Vote
That is an entirely different subject... but if you don't think repeaters are needed (at all) and think that better antennas will solve all coverage issues then (a) the world must be flat, and (b) there must be no such thing as terrain obstruction or path loss either. Not even you greatest home brew...

Re: DSTAR Vs C4FM Vote
But why are there so few amateurs using the repeaters in the country? Because there is no one to speak to. That is the whole point of networking... This further illustrates the gap between the defeatist attitude of many hams and those who are trying to drive the hobby forward. Forget digital ARs and...

Re: DSTAR Vs C4FM Vote
Thanks Matt for correcting me. I still don't see any merit in the Fusion approach. Where is the Yaesu approach going? It has no hope of ever achieving acceptance when it is only being marketed to Amateurs. It offers nothing that either DMR or P25 can already do, yet both of those offer hobbyists the...

Re: DSTAR Vs C4FM Vote
The interesting thing is to look at the MARC coverage throughout the US- clearly many clubs in the US have gone this way. I realise clubs here want to hang onto the boat anchors but this is an investment in the future... rather than something that is AR specific going with a technology that is expan...

Re: DSTAR Vs C4FM Vote
This is a fairly old topic and I don't think the question is of any value now. Both DMR and P25 have taken off and both lend themselves to networking. The Yaesu approach, in my view, is junk targeted at amateurs who just want to be different on the cheap. C4FM without a vo-coder is junk... if you do...

Re: Have you recently tried becoming a WIA Exams Assessor?
Trash, Constituents? When did a self confessed anarchist become a "constituent"? You don't listen to others so why would I pay any heed to you? I listen to those who want to get in and help and not just use the internet to "trash" what they themselves aren't willing to implement....

Re: Repeater application process
Hi Peter, Peter Mill is back dealing with repeater applications- you have 2 options I would suggest... 1. Submit your paperwork to ACMA and they will forward it to the WIA. OR 2. Submit your paperwork to the WIA office, who will refer it to Peter Mill. ACMA have indicated they want (1) to be followe...

Re: Have you recently tried becoming a WIA Exams Assessor?
Hi Wayne, Everyone needs to comply with the rules in force at the time they sit for a test. We don't require people to resit tests to prove ongoing competence so why should any of us who are licensed have to do the practical? Surely most of us would be able to demonstrate prior "learning" ...

Re: Have you recently tried becoming a WIA Exams Assessor?
Wayne can you explain why you believe the practical is an "overkill"? In the "old days" setting up practical exams would have been... impractical. When I did mine at Macquarie Uni with about 20 or 30 others under the control of the SMA or DOCs (can't remember which it was!) staff...

Re: Have you recently tried becoming a WIA Exams Assessor?
What moral is being corrupted? Greed? The WIA is bound by the ACMA to only charge what it costs so that knocks out greed. Discrimination against new applicants? Rules get changed by government all the time. I only was on P plates for a year. I suppose changing that rule was corrupt too? Stupid, stup...

Re: Shipping costs re purchased goods from MFJ Enterprises
No problem, when I started using them in about 2010 I was the first in my office. Now there are at least 5 others I work with who have used MAS. Those talking about Australia Post neglect to consider how savings can be made. They either negotiate volume discounts- which MAS has via DHL as they ship ...
