Re: Software for calculating feed impedance
EZNEC is easy. You just need to put in the x,y and z coordinates of each element. If you give me the dimensions of everything I will do it for you. Imclide all the ground wires too. Send to my email address VK3auu@dcsi.net.au

Re: Smartmeter UHF EMR survey VIC
The old adage that BS baffles brains is alive and well.
They don't even quote any actual figures as to either the average or peak power levels. It is mainly a lot of speculative conjecture with no substance to back it up.

Re: How sociable are 6 and 2m?
Neville, I presume you live in Yea. You really need to build a beam. Go to the vk5DJ page and download the DL6WU calculator and make a 10 element yagi. I made one about 28 years ago with High Tensile fence wire for elements and a 2 x 1 inch pine boom, no element corrections needed. i could hear W5UN...

Have a look at

and this one might have a circuit somewhere

Brandon,The reason why what you say is correct is that you have an Amateur Radio licence.

Re: New LCD detail shows 50-54MHz for Advanced Licence
I would be happier if we just had 50 _ 50.5 and let the standards down there too. The current situation is stupid and we don't need all that bandwidth anyway, just to clutter it up with barely used repeaters.

Re: Gamma match and pattern skewing
The solution to the question is to do some actual measurement of field strength looking at a reasonably close source such as another yagi just into the far field. Sources such as beacons or distant stations are subject to reflections from all sorts of things, even local buildings. My instinct is tha...

I daresay you can now use Google earth to fairly accurately define the points at each end of the path and use magnetic compasses of whatever sort takes your fancy to set the direction. You also need a chart of the earth's magnetic deviation which is obtainable here http://msi.nga.mil/MSISiteContent/...

Re: Grid pack versus yagi
Good luck Scott. You should have about 21 dbd which is the equivalent of a 1.5 metre gridpak. You might do better with a split dipole for the feed, but that is only a guess. Contrary to popular opinion, suitably designed long yagis can have -3db gain bandwidths of around 10 percent. The DL6WU doesn'...

Re: "Pepper Box" antenna?
Based on a "back of an envelope" calculation using his 180 degree horizontal and 50 degree vertical beam widths, I would say that you are pretty close Peter, perhaps even slightly high. His claimed 14 db gain is way out of the bounds of reality.

That would mean that the ssb transmission is outside the band plan because the sidebands are above 140. You don't need any guard band.

Re: How did we end up with 7.076MHz for JT65?
You need to get on some Dx reflector, find a clear freq somewhere else and tell them to listen for you there. There is nothing to stop you working split. You don't have to Tx on 7076

Re: F-Call thoughts
Good idea. One only has to look at the results on WSPR to see how effective very low power digital signals are propagated. Just have a look at the Database link at http://wsprnet.org/drupal/ Almost all are running less than 10 watts and some down to 0.05 watts.

No, not from South Gippsland. I get it on Speclab all the time and often I can hear it.
