Re: What's on your Workbench?

It's now a transceiver. Incomplete but it makes contacts. Added stages include: * second buffer for VXO * transmit mixer and post mixer BPF * transmit carrier oscillator and buffer (which is keyed) * transmit power amplifier chain and LPF https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WN_2YBu0r7A WN_2YBu0r7A

Re: Suggest a transceiver for Foundation Call

A bit older would be a good used FT-840 (Yaesu's version of the IC718 - or is the Icom a version of the Yaesu?). Rigs like the FT840 and IC718 don't have menus so should be quite easy to use. The FT747 is older than the FT840 but is cheap/plasticky looking. A CW IF filter would be desirable but if y...

Re: H44 business idea

Interesting idea. Thought about listing it on Airbnb to mitigate some of the risk? Both owner and visitor have ratings (like on ebay) so there's a degree of accountability on both sides. Was chatting to some friends who had such a rental on Bruny Island (Tas). It has so far worked out well for them ...

Re: Melbourne QRP by the Bay - Sat 14 November 2015

The 14th was a great success with about 20 present. Some weird and wonderful rigs and antennas were brought along and contacts were made on various bands. We passed the mic around to give out numbers for the VHF Field Day. Dinner was had at a nearby Peruvian restaurant - highly recommended. A great ...

Re: What's on your Workbench?

Ugly but it works. A detailed description of my latest homebrew 7 MHz receiver. Very simple, almost all discrete parts and good performance. I also describe a mixing scheme using common crystals that could be suitable for a dual band (7/14 MHz) receiver or transceiver.

Re: Heads Up!: 2015 Spring VHF-UHF Field Day

Saturday afternoon is the Melbourne QRP by the Bay gathering (details https://www.facebook.com/events/698958660206329/ ).

But weather permitting we might take along a small 2m SSB station. So you may well hear multiple callsigns on air.

Re: Melbourne QRP by the Bay - Sat 14 November 2015

Since next month's Melbourne QRP event coincides with the Spring VHF/UHF Field Day, I might bring along a small 2m SSB station to give it a VHF flavour. Although the location is 0 metres above sea level, some excellent 2m contacts have been made from it, including VK5s last year. EYV2b3WAqvs In addi...

Melbourne QRP by the Bay - Sat 14 November 2015

(an event for those who love homebrew portable radio equipment, outdoors transmitting and QRP operating) Following previous events, which keep getting better and better, we're doing it again. A fifth 'QRP by the Bay' gathering will be held on Saturday November 14, 2015 at Chelsea beach, 30km south o...

Despite having only 3 transistors and 1 IC, what you see below transmits and receives a frequency agile signal on 7 MHz SSB. phasing ssb.JPG * 2N2222A VXO using 7.16 MHz ceramic resonator - covers 7.040 - 7.140 MHz * MPF102 buffer * BC548 RF preamp (rx only) * LM386 AF amp on rx/mic amp on tx * 1N41...

Re: How sociable are 6 and 2m?

Perhaps 6m might be the best of a poor choice. I'd go with 2m initially, but with a view to getting something going on 6m by early December. 6m activity is sporadic and you may go weeks or more between hearing a signal outside of a few VHF Field Day contacts. Whereas 2m at least has the Wednesday e...

Saddened to hear of Fred's passing. I was also privileged to meet Fred at a past WIA convention. Warm, friendly and approachable are my memories. Fred's NZART and IARU service has been described elsewhere. A biography appears at: http://www.qsl.net/zl2amj/aboutme/me.html Also important was Fred's co...

A little earlier W5KHT described a video Gunnplexer system.
