Re: What has FT8 done for 6m ?
zl vk is not dx Ok,, I'll ask the silly question. From S.E. Qld what constitutes "DX" on 6m? Does it have to do with distance? Is it defined by DX entity? Does it vary during the sunspot cycle? If distance; A VK6 in Perth is more distant from me than FO5, FK, 3D2 etc. Would VK6 be DX? If ...

Re: Australian Waters Qualification (VHF Licence)
You will probably find that you will be competing with Volunteer Marine Rescue, Coastguard and boat clubs for the business. Not that that is a bad thing. They already do courses for the Marine Radio Operator's Certificate of Proficiency (MROCP) and Marine Radio Operator's VHF Certificate of Proficie...

Re: ACMA inspecting lots of F Calls
I have been following this thread with interest since it began. It has proven valuable for me because as, as a result of reading the thread, I have tested all my second hand gear. (into a dummy load of course) and found that I only have one radio that can tx out of band. Luckily that is fixable with...

Re: Would you pay $11599 for 1 "S" unit?
I think that what 6SIX is getting at is that you would be paying $11599 to run it at 400w, the legal max. =1 "S" unit. (We are all law abiding hams here aren't we?) I agree that the same amount could be better spent on council approval for a 50'+ tower its fabrication and installation and ...

I wonder what happened during the big dust storms that rolled across Eastern Australia in the last year or so? 73 Wayne VK4WDM I rode my bike home on the Pacific Hwy during the dust storm that hit Brisbane last year Wayne. I picked a a layer of red dust thick enough to cover up all colour from the ...

Re: Why the mindless 59's?
A couple of years back I got a bee in my bonnet over bogus 59 reports in contests. It got me no-where so I gave up. :) This year my favourite gripe about contests is the apparent suspension of both etiquette and bandplans by contesters. While taking part in my favourite daily net we were constantly ...

How did you go with the bottom section og the Stationmaster VK4HJI?.....My project had stalled (dam school holidays!)... No reply from the other fellow. I just used some of the other aluminium tubing I have left over from other projects and made a 10m high vertical. I currently have a few projects ...

Re: Helical whips as short dipoles
Hi Wayne, I have a pair of Hustler 80 metre monoband mobile antenna configured as an upright V dipole, and it works very well. Signal reports compare favorably with my G5RV, but the only real issue is its very limited bandwidth, which can be expended a little with an ATU. There is a photo of it on ...

Re: The meaning of DX on 6m
Thank you all for the considered responses to my post. I have formed the opinion that there are many opinions on what DX means on the Australian 6m band. (as most posters here have stated) I had come to that conclusion before I posted the original question but, being new, I wanted to make sure I was...

Re: The meaning of DX on 6m
"international" has a very simple, plain English meaning: "Inter-nations," in other words: "between nations." I agree Wayne, the meaning of the word was not the subject of my second question. rather its meaning in the context of the phrase in question. 50.110 is, by ag...

Re: The meaning of DX on 6m
I somewhat agree with your sentiments but remember the band plans are mostly guidelines not a legal requirements. I definitely agree with the need for the bandplans and fully agree with then being a gentlemen's agreement as this has the greatest chance of compliance by the majority of people. Most ...

The meaning of DX on 6m
Hello everyone, Firstly let me state that I am not trying to start more arguments. This is not meant to discuss the validity, or otherwise, of band plans etc. Having said that I find myself wondering what constitutes DX in the minds of the majority of 6m users. I have tried to look up a reputable de...

Re: Operating & Ethics manual - good readable download
While generally a well thought out piece of work it is ruined in a couple of places by the author/s allowing their prejudices and personal opinions into print. I was amused to see their personal opinion of DX nets intrude into a document that, one would hope, is an unbiased guide to all amateurs. I ...

Re: SSTV transmissions and 50-52MHZ
That puts pay to any bunk that SSTV is telephony! The WIA band plans states "modes such as SSTV are usually sent as SSB signals, so these modes can be used in the SSB band". Well, not compliant with LCD 15(3). Owen My intent was to point this out in the original post but in a non confront...

I know the original post was a request for a design for a two el quad but I thought I'd share my opinion on two el quads on 6m. This is my first season on 6m and I am using a 2 el quad as my first 6m "beam" antenna. I have found it to be very good with strong contacts into VK2, VK3, Vk5, V...
