Re: FT8 6m DX
The two way heard VK3ZL to EI3KD at 17,375 using FT8 on Wed 24 July 2019 is a fantastic achievement and was almost certainly nEs and nothing else. I make this claim on the basis that my backscatter radar work (See DUBUS.ORG and download the sample copy, article pp29-38) clearly shows nEs transiting ...

Re: The big party of the VK Logger
Hi Adam, Thanks so much for "the logger" and all the time you put into it to make it a unique resource. I have had a lot of fun using it over many years, so I will greatly miss the information and content, especially the forum, the beacon lists and the history, no other resource even comes...

Re: Video: IC-9700 VHF/UHF/1200 MHz Base introduction
Hi Roger, It does indeed look like the 10MHz ref input is only a reference to adjust the internal reference frequency, Page 13-3 of the IC-9700 english manual does apparently show this, but little detail is given. The basic manual in English is at: http://www.icom.co.jp/world/support/download/manual...
Re: FT8 6m DX
Hi Lloyd,,,
It will never be the same again, same was said when cars replaced horses and when AM replaced CW spark.
Good thing is many contacts are being made by FT8 on otherwise dead bands, just goes to show that we do not need a soalr max to have some fun.

Re: FT8 6m DX
Hello Colin, If you are interested in long haul 6m DX the posts are saying that some serious DX, read rare, is able to be worked during the summer and winter solstice, even at the now very low sunspot numbers. Until FT8 and JT65 came along then this was thought to be a possibility from VK2 and 3 via...

Re: Icom IC-9700 Pre-release brochure
Hi Adam,
The IC-9700 looks great, and it even has a 10MHz reference input, a change from the first version we saw.
PS. Thanks for getting the forum going again Adam, much appreciated, for better sharing and discussion.

FT8 6m DX
Since the introduction of this mode it has generated a substantial surge in 6m digital activity and many long haul contacts. The most notable recent signals heard were in June from EU and central Asia from VK3 and VK5, but as far as I know no contacts were completed. Contacts were completed from VK8...

Hi Wayne,
Yep, summer and winter solstices, +- 1 about month usually.
But you need to keep your ears pinned,,, look out when there is any local Es, summer or winter.
Check out the excellent series on nEs By Roger Harrison in DUBUS.

Re: Solar Cycle 25...how old will u be?
Stop dreaming.
There is a whole new world of nEs to explore to NA and Europe as has already been shown this year, and it happens twice a year.
So, the big question is how big is n, 14, 20? You do not have to wait till 2022.

Re: WIA submission for allocation at 70 MHz
Thanks to the WIA. This development of this submission by the WIA is exactly the reason that all amateurs should be members. It is by having the dedicated resources of the WIA together with many very experienced volunteers that a submission of such quality can be developed. Without the WIA, this cou...

Hello Roger, Well done. I have followed this story with a great deal of interest. The amount of work done by Roger to put all the published work together is truly amazing, just look at the references. Roger is talking about summer and winter solstice nEs that occurr every year, not about equinox nF....

Re: IC-7300 - Software Defined Radio
Hello, The 7300 certainly is getting some great reviews and even has a 4.9 out of 5 rating on eham after 60 reviews, unprecedented. http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/12742 Now for the 7300S, a 10 watt version for $1300?? If Icom can also provide a transverter offset the 7300S would make an ideal IF...

Hello Roger, Congratulations. Having closely followed the LCD evolution over many years and also having read the WIA submission (URL above) I must take this opportunity to congratulate the WIA board for developing such a comprehensive document. It sets out a clear direction for the future of amateur...

Re: Solar Cycle #24 is (Doh) Crashing
Hi Danny, A most interesting post. BUT,,, all is not lost, you have overlooked a very exciting 6m propagation mode, that of nEs . This mode provides openings to the Pacific and Central America during every summer solstice. There is also the possibility of nEs to Europe during our winter solstice, a ...

Re: Catalyst about Mobile Telephones
Hi David,
Mobile phones are similar to cars, we put up with the downside, EMR injuries and car injuries.
They are such a core part of our "modern" society that the problems are tolerated.

Re: Backscatter Radar
Hello, Here is another application of the bistatic backscatter chirp radar, this time using acoustic siganls with the antenna pointing straight up (so it is a SODAR instead of a RADAR) and uses the same chirp pulse compression signal processing as the RADAR above. The chirp SODAR yields 33dB of proc...

Re: Backscatter Radar
Hi, Here is the pic from the backscatter radar for today at 01:00 UTC on 28MHz @ 80 degrees. The propagation was 1 x Es, 1 X F, 5 or maybe 6 X Es to 13500km. Chirp_SODAR_124 Dec. 27 12.38.jpg . The Es did not manage to be strong enough to blanket the F layer at 3900km. As A result the 6m link to the...
