Re: What's on your Workbench?

listened longingly to the slow wobbly drifitng morse this box made last night :D thanks peter!.. Thanks Andrew. A combination of bad keying and a slight wobble as cranking speed varied makes it sound quite eerie doesn't it? A bigger capacitor across the generator (1000uF instead of 68uF) would have...

Re: What's on your Workbench?

Hand-cranked 7 MHz CW transmitter

Built into a torch

Vigorous cranking gives 1w out but 500mW is more realistic.

Sand. Looking a lot better after the appointment with the vacuum cleaner.

Activity as heard and worked from a local pier. Poor conditions/activity from VK1/2 but some good signals from VK5.

Re: Arduino

Start off with the basic flashing LED thing, make some small changes to the program and upload. Being able to modify and upload stuff (which isn't always straightforward) constitutes major progress for a beginner. Then try longer programs to do things (eg send callsign in Morse or call CQ) and learn...

Re: [Melbourne] QRP by the Bay - Sat Nov 8, 2014

I hate to ask but how did you disable the ankle bracelet ? It's split. Made from an aluminium egg ring (from an op shop) with a slit to allow it to be put on. A velcro tie keeps it firm. It was a great event with a fantastic attendance (nearly 30). Amateurs were in the area from before 11am until a...

Continued good interest, and really looking forward to it. Set up a station or just drop by, QRP by the Bay is on today ! Today's weather will be a mixture, with a hot morning followed by a cool, gusty change . You may have to accept a less ambitious but more robust antenna. The safety of other beac...

Re: CQ Parrot...

1. What is the general opinion about CQ parrots ? (will people be upset by its use) Great idea. Just speak a bit slower and repeat your callsign more than some of the HF contest ones you hear. Upsetting people isn't an issue; it's not as if the bottom end of 2m has a scarcity of quiet frequencies f...

Re: 2M SSB Calling/Listening frequencies... ?

In the old days a 'CQ' was a general call to anyone, but I am not so sure these days. Still the case today. Following the example of other ops on .200 I have been calling "CQ - beaming XYZ". I thought the beam heading was just a general piece of info - but perhaps it is code for 'I am cal...

Re: Which Morse Key?

At most I would offer him HALF what he is asking, but having said that, I am no collector of morse keys so I really dont know their value. Very much depends on whether you get it for 'hamfest prices' or 'ebay prices'. Leave anything described as 'rare' or 'vintage' to the collectors who will pay ov...

Greg, The one I mostly use is identical to: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Vintage-1941-Morse-Code-Key-/141444120609?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item20eeba0021 Something like this style should also be OK but avoid paying eBay (inflated) prices. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MORSE-KEY-ON-BAKELITE-BASE-/...

Not a new project but one from 20 years ago that, despite the dust, was found to still work when the right crystal was put in.

Re: Dxpeditions using 50.110MHZ as a working frequency

Interesting what the WIA thinks is the calling frequency on 6m (from tomorrows broadcast): Terry, while the text can be misconstrued (due to the headings) I suspect that these frequencies are purely recommendations for scout stations (JOTA being not far off). It's clearer on the scouts page at http...

Re: What's on your Workbench?

Now on the air is a compact 1 - 2w 40m SSB transceiver. NE602 x 2, LM386 x 1, BC548 x 2, 2N2222 x 1, BD139 x 2 The happy coincidence of a 16 MHz VXO and 8.867 MHz ladder crystal filter allows frequency agility with off-the-shelf crystals. Two parallel crystals allow a wide tuning coverage for a VXO ...
