Re: More re NBN interference.

This month's RadCom (magazine of the UK ham society RSGB) has an article about VDSL interference. This is the wonderful new "mixed" technology or Fibre to the Node. It focuses on how it just raises background noise and so is hard to detect, but to focus on the guard bands between carriers ...

Re: Catalyst about Mobile Telephones

Some good discussions about the science can be found here - https://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/author/ltrottier/ It's a good site to check out on all sorts of controversial medical issues, curated by a neurologist at Yale University School of Medicine.

WiFi, It varies max 4W EIRP but most mobile devices (laptops, phones) are in the 100-200mW range. http://nuke.freenet-antennas.com.au/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=33 Mobile phones 250mW according to Wikipedia. ISTR base stations being 40W into high gain co-linears back in the '90s ...

And to those curious what would change my mind. I think that a large study showing that tumour incidence has increased since mobiles have become common but not in, say, the Amish community. Something that is large (so random variations are smoothed out), with a control group (to show that it's not s...

Re: Catalyst about Mobile Telephones

I'm curious about those worried that mobile phones cause cancer. What piece of evidence would convince you that they were harmless? Scientific studies have been used to 'prove' both sides of the argument, so what would clinch it beyond a doubt? It's easy to find evidence to back up our beliefs, work...

Re: Unusual signals on 40m

You could try using one of the websdrs to listen in from another part of the world which may help to narrow down location. Of course, finding one in the right part of the world and covering the frequency of interest is a little harder.

I still use lynx and wget for sites that I wouldn't want to view in graphics and for troubleshooting. Before IE was Mosaic and from memory Netscape Navigator back when we used Trumpet Winsock to do this funny thing called TCP/IP. Then Microsoft decided that MSN wasn't going to dominate the world and...

I would say that the reflections are off everything. By knowing the expected distances of the hops, if it's mid-point then it's off the ionosphere, if it's full-distance it's from whatever's at the end. The important point isn't knowing "hey there's propagation to XYZ and it's X Km wide" b...

Re: Future of 50-52MHZ -deafening silence!

OK - Why we need to be primary 50MHz - 52MHz? All ham bands are most useful when aligned worldwide so that we can experiment with things like EME/satellites/propagation which don't follow national borders. 50MHz is at the boundary of HF and VHF and research conducted by amateurs here is important in...

Re: Laptop and 169.x.x.x IP address problem

There are indeed 2 addresses; 1) An external address that's usually dished out of a pool by your ISP (a globally reachable address) (WAN) 2) A range of addresses (private, should never be seen on the Internet) used for your internal network (LAN). Your router obtains your WAN address and then uses N...

Re: Inflatable "dish" for the field day fanatic

According to Wikipedia (not the most reliable source, I know) there's a valid reason for a spherical reflector; The telescope is a spherical reflector (as opposed to a parabolic reflector). This form is due to the method used to aim the telescope: the telescope's dish is fixed in place, and the rece...

Re: New TV query.

What brand/model was the power board - I can't say that my tivo generates noise (that I've noticed) but my old CRT widescreen TV causes bad QRM on MW AM. When the TV finally dies I'll probably get an LCD, I prefer the technology anyway.

Last time I looked, MFJ were making a parametric equaliser for boosting frequencies that were going quiet. As a fellow ex-pat, I've been there and done that. A helpful tip shared by VK4WR is that the insect screen on the security window is held in place by a rubber tube. In one corner the 2 ends of the long piece of tube should meet. Grab hold of one end (lever it out gently with a screwdriver) and you c...

I found a source of PCBs and USB serial cables here;

I've not used them but they look suitable to embed inside a rig to make it USB enabled. Of course screening would be a good idea first.
