And I live in one, a nut shell that is.

Have a great new year folk. Hope the propagation improves soon as we all have cabin fever it seems.

Re: Solar powered shacks

Hi you Blokes. My take on it is a hybrid system. Two big 100AH celltower 12V batteries (swap outs) split between two groups of radio gear, one the main 7300 radio and main dual bander and the other is all the ancilliary stuff like extra dual banders and spare old Yaesu 757, scanner and transverters....

Re: FT8 on 2m

Good one Brian. But at that sig strength you could have wkd Peter on SSB. In contrast last season with 150W and a very basic 6 el horizontal built into my Hex beam I worked three openings and on the best day wkd 13 VK stns across 5 states. All SSB. And another local here wkd a few of them with just ...

Re: FT8 on 2m

Do we really have to go there? I had hoped digi might stay away frm 2mtrs. Bored already with it on HF and almost bored on 6 though its usefull to stretch to other continents to explore DX paths. On 2m? we might get some more double hop, but it will be boring. I suppose somebody will break a distanc...

I would suggest to get a better feel of its world wide coverage is to go to WEBSDR.ORG or SDR.HU and start listening from different parts of the world. I just put up with the lousy thing so have not done this yet, bad enough combating local digital house noise from town at S7 on 40.

Hi tech here. A spring out of a roller blind, a small plastic toy motor gearbox with one wheel lathed out so its like a pulley. Jaycar 6 cell battery holder and a couple spring loaded switches. A miniature bowden cable out of some old bit of Mil radio gear (arc5?) and some cardboard tubes, paint and...

Ahh. David. Did you not read the rest of my tongue in cheek posting? I didnt do 80mtrs. I used it for long haul VHF 2mtr into VK and was and still am (with better coax now) in the ZL forward pack when it comes to SpE DX on 2mtr. :D :D Yes I know its awfull but the loss produced was less than the gai...

Every one else has thrown their opinions in so why not me too. :D In my years of land mobile vhf coms in vehicles and buildings making joins in RG58 whether its U or AU or what ever or plain old RG104 in the old days I made coax joins almost every day. Yes it make impedance "bumps" introdu...

Hook it up to a spare car battery for a trial Mal. That should prove the voltage drop thing as that was first thought for me too when I read your first post. Check the fuseholders on the power cable too, bit of flux on the ends of the fuses or oxide on the metal ends?. I know its only on 80 and 40 b...

:D :D Last Post. (anyone have a bugle?) I will cease stirring on this subject as it has drifted a bit anyway from the original comments about making cheaper entry for the poor young fellow Ham who has a $ hurdle to jump. The same fellow probably has an I phone cost in the hundreds of dollars and a f...

BUT (and this is where it gets weird) - they ARE homebrewers! They are running variants of the Indian BITX low cost transceiver design, followed by individually-designed linear amplifiers based on International Rectifier "IRF" series switching FETS. So, the "biggest rig on the air&qu...

Re: Exam / Licence Price & Young People ..

Well maybe like ZL3OZ says, there should just be one class of licence, and it should be free. Not my words grouped like this. I did say all one class of license. I did not say it should be free! The free bit is bad. Most definitely not free, as that removes any inclination or commitment from Govt a...

After what I posted about ZL licences I am now glad I am licenced ZL and not VK. I think all this different classes of exam and proficiency levels is just a load of old fart stuff. Its class segregation isnt it? Mines bigger than yours? Of course I will get either flak or total ignore from those in ...

Some thoughts from a ZL What ever happens DO NOT EMBRACE free licenses. WE went that way as you probably know and it seemed good at the time. Hams mostly want something for nothing. We have the same declining influx issue in ZL. Free license hasnt done anything for that. It has not been a deciding i...

Does anybody still use your existing repeater? We have three 2mtr and one 70cm repeater in our zone under branch 34 and I am a trustee and service tech but I question the need now. No body uses them and literally days and sometimes weeks go by without so much as a trigger. Value for money spent on l...
