Re: Ground gain - effect of antenna height...
Steve My QTH is on a 70m asl terrace about 1km from ocean. The antenna is about 10m high at about 20m from the edge of the terrace which drops away at about 45deg. I get great results over the sea on terrestrial and EME. On EME frequently decodes at down to -1deg. Your picture looks pretty good to m...

Re: ZL2UHF 2m Beacon now running JT4D
Here is a typical decode: 054500 6 -24 -0.6 -39 46 * ZL2UHF RE78 1 0 A I started looking for the beacon on Sunday morning and found that tuning the radio to 144.273,6 MHz works. The path from here is almost all over mountainous country and I have not yet heard the CW id part of the transmission sequ...

Westland 2m beacon ZL3MHB now QRV
At 0200z this afternoon we turned on a new 2m beacon, ZL3MHB is now operating on 144.286MHz from a spot about 10km north of Hokitika (loc RE57mi). It is running 14W to a horizontal 5 element yagi pointing west, it is at 40m asl about 3km inland with a clear view to the west. We are hoping it will fi...

Re: Marine AIS Antennas
My antenna is a commercial 150MHz 5 el yagi. I used Yagimax to recalculate element lengths for 162MHz, leaving spacings as they were for 150MHz. The feed is still around 50ohms, into a mast-mounted preamp, then fed with RG6 (75ohm) cable, approx 20m. Calculated antenna gain is about 8dB and it is po...

Re: AIS Marine Traffic Tracking (tropo indicator)
Yesterday (monday) I installed a preamp on my AIS receiver and in the evening got signals from two ships in the Tasman, furthest being approx 400km NW of here. One finally disappeared as it approached Farewell spit on the way to Nelson. Not sure if it was coincidence that I had just added the preamp...

Re: Phasing 2 antennas on 2 towers
Stacking 6el yagis at 0.6 wavelengths works well, I have used both 5el and 6 el yagis at 0.625 wavelengths with good results. There are good articles in the UKSMG archives , UKSMG.org, "Zen and the art of stacking" and "Stacking for 50MHz" When I chose 2x6el stacked I wanted a co...

Re: Another Massive 144MHz Es Opening.
Without doubt my best Es opening on 2m. Total of 57 stations worked VK1 1 VK2 11 VK3 32 VK4 4 VK5 7 VK7 2 The morning brought marginal tropo QSOs with VK2, the first Es QSO here was VK2MAX at 2352z. Initially only stations from VK2ZT up to VK2MAX, then at 0032z VK5AKK appeared with VK5NY and VK5ZK (...

Re: E51USA/b 6M Beacon
Bob thanks for your good work on this beacon. Great to work you and Victor - first time for me to South Cooks. This beacon will be extremely useful when (if?) we get some trans-pacific DX
