Re: New 10m Beacon at Mildura

Hello all,

The VK3RRU 10m beacon (28.2630 CW) is back on air and is being spotted again. It is transmitting 12W into a 1/2 vertical antenna. Reception reports are welcome to vk3rru@gmail.com

You can find out more at: http://www.qrz.com/db/vk3rru

Cheers,

Re: 2m WSPR Monthly World Rankings

Hi Leigh, Thanks for the reports as usual, and good to see you back up at the pointy end! For the information of the group, I have been running 2W TX power exclusively for the past few months from an FT847 with a crystal heater, and a Cushcraft 13B2. (I was away for all of April, hence no April resu...

Re: Free DV and Codec 2

Hi all, As Simon mentioned, it was a very successful test with some encouraging results. At one point I had a local noise floor or S9 caused by a Plasma TV. On SSB it was was extremely difficult to copy Simon, however in DV mode the codec did a great job and gave intelligible audio (not perfect - bu...

Re: Free DV and Codec 2

G'day Simon, Thanks mate - that will be good. Here you go: http://freedv.org/tiki-index.php Let me know when you have it ready to go. FYI: I managed a QSO with VK2JN and VK2AKU yesterday afternoon on 7.198 with a very high noise floor (S8). It was hit and miss given the poor conditions, but still a ...

Re: Free DV and Codec 2

Hello All, I have FreeDV 0.96.6 Beta setup here with my FT817ND at the moment. I can TX/RX on 40m, 20m and 10m. I am keen to do some testing if anyone here is able to fire it up at your end? I did manage to decode / receive VK2JN on 7.189LSB, in FreeDV 1600 Wide mode as soon as I hooked up the RX si...

Re: Bight Path on 2m WSPR

Hi Leigh, Thanks for the post. In my testing, I actually did go from 10W straight to 2W, as the data shows. I did not do any 5W tests, despite my original comment! (I skipped a 5W test in the interest of time, as I wanted to get to the lowest power level possible before the path closed.) Sorry for a...

Re: WSPR operations on 144 MHz

Hi Alan. That AE is interesting. I have seen similar from your signal but I have not taken a screen capture as yet... Next time I see it I will and post it up. Peter, that's a great idea running the multiple instances of WSPR. I look forward to seeing how this goes for you. Perrin VK3XPT Sent from m...

Re: Opek HVT-400. Mobile?

Hi there. I have one, the "HVT-400B" model. It is NOT a heavy duty antenna at all - I would not run it on my 4x4 when going real 4x4ing as it would not stand up to direct hits. However on the boot of my Falcon it works pretty well. I usually just run a 28MHz whip on the back of the Falcon,...

Re: WSPR for 144 and above

Hi Ian, I will second all of Leighs comments. FYI, many times when I have noticed good conditions on WSPR I will jump on SSB and even FM to see how I go. WSPR is not only a great tool for monitoring propagation, but is also great fun if you use it to test and improve your station. For me it is all a...

Re: Arduino Based Simple Beacon Controller

Good job! I am using an Arduino Uno to control the VK3RRU 10m beacon. So simple, and it works great! It has been running without an issue for about 12 months now. The Uno is driving an opto (PC123 I think I used?) to key the rig. I found some "beacon" code on the internet that I modified t...

Re: WSPR operations on 144 MHz

Hi Leigh,

I am back from a month of work travel, and it looks like I need to fire up WSPR, ASAP! :)

I will aim to have my station running again from tonight, at 20mW.

Cheers,

Re: Q codes

in my opinion a MASSIVE advantage in QRP SSB use. VK3YE, as you are another QRP operator what do you think Peter? Perrin - I think there's a bit to this for reasons not yet raised but which you demonstrated tonight with WSPR. It gets back to basic communications theory with weak signals where thing...

Re: Q codes

Hi All, Back on the original topic for a moment, I opperate QRP portable (SSB) a LOT... I love the challenge of QRP, and I can tell you all that without Q codes it would often be significantly harder to sucessfully have a QSO with the person at the other end. Q codes are, in my oppinion a MASSIVE ad...

Re: WSPR operations on 144 MHz

John, VK2YW has just sent me this screenshot of his WSPR RX window, which shows my 20mW transmission. John's hardware is an ATN 10 el crossed yagi, no preamp and an Icom IC-9100.
FYI, my hardware is a Cushcraft 13B2 yagi and a Yaesu FT847.

Thanks John!

Re: WSPR operations on 144 MHz

It is great to see so many people jumping on 2m WSPR... I will stay at 50mW for a while, but might try going even lower in the future. The path between VK2KRR and I has been excellent, and it would be interesting to see just how low we can go! Sorry about the state of the screen in the picture. In a...

Re: UK gets 5MHz free of charge

In the UK it is quite legal to own a "snipped diode" HF rig. Its only illegal if you use it outside amateur bands. Most (if not all) 5MHz users are using this type of radio. However, the ACMA have made it clear that their interpretation of the radcomms act disallows amatuer equipment modi...
