Re: Mind programming using microwaves
Single vehicle rollover accidents on isolated country roads are caused by driver fatigue and kangaroos, but also by oncoming cars on narrow windy dirt roads and heavy rain squalls, especially at night. With the RFS i have attended some of these incidents, one was a close mate, and he rolled his lan...

Re: Up 5?
If you are using a "vintage" rig with only one VFO,you are pretty much out of luck,as the "clarifier" doesn't reach that sort of split. Of course, you can use a second receiver, but that adds complications in both antenna switching & operation.. I'm not that keen on "DX&qu...

Re: RD and ILLW conflict
Really ? Light house is International ? Then why are you all using dipoles on 80M to work international lighthouses ? Why are you using IARU contest bands when there are bands that are designated non contest bands ? Why are you not running 30 17 15 12 and 10 where very few RD contestors would ever ...

Re: Video: Building a Dipole for 10M
I Tried to get telescoping aluminium rods in metric....still can't visualise 190 cm height and... WW2 was won in imperial measurements...so there! But which Imperial measures? Our 44 gallon drums are 55 gallons in the USA! We weren't even consistent with the use of one system------Rolls-Royce speci...

Re: Video: Building a Dipole for 10M
Peter you are showing your youth many of us were around before the 1960's and work equally badly in both ft and inches and this metric thingy ( it wont last) also we have both types of music country and western I was born in the 1940s,so that doesn't work with me. The "Exercise Books" we ...

Re: Video: Building a Dipole for 10M
I don't think "F"calls should get used to magic formulas like 468/f in MHz which give the length in feet. We are a metric country,so it is more instructive to use 300/f in MHz, halve it,multiply it by 0.95 for "end effect",& you have it. After all,it's a halfwave dipole on &q...

Re: VK2 HF 4WD/Travelers Net ??
The Traveller's Net operates Australia wide----many participants are in the ES.
The 4WD folks have some Nets,too--but they are on non-Ham frequencies.

I bought one a few years back for $8--not going. Popped it open, problem was a faulty squelch pot------fixed that,& it went OK. I used it for quite a while, couldn't see a lot wrong with either the operation,or construction. Yeah! I'm a Trained Tech, too,& I've seen worse, masquerading as profes...

Re: Where are the VK6's ??
Well,I suppose it's fair enough,as it is on "144 & 432". VK6 is about as far as you " T'other siders" are going to get on 2m & still be in Oz! I'd dearly love to have a contact with Leigh over the Bight, but even if I had anything set up,I'm very unlikely to do it from Per...

Re: Where are the VK6's ??
Back in the day, prior to "Economic Rationalism",Wagin ,with a population of around 1600 (a guess,as it was a bit larger than the current 1427), had, just from the 6WA staff, around 3-4 Hams, with a floating population of 1-2 others. There were other Hams in the district, but I didn't know much...

Re: Where are the VK6's ??
We are obviously not going to get the amount of activity on 2m,even in proportion to the reduced numbers, that we got before "Z" calls got access to HF. I can chuck up a "glorified clothesline" for 20m & work the world, but to do anything serious on 2m or 70cm,I need to stick u...

Re: Where are the VK6's ??
Back in the day, various organisations had permanent staff in country towns, many of which were Hams. In the late 1980s,early 1990s,there was an exodus of these people,as companies & Government instrumentalities retreated to the city. Telecom Aust, for instance, for many years had Broadcast section ...

Re: Silicon Chip electronic version
People have been emulating Hanrahan for years ("We'll all be rooned!"). I remember this sort of thing back in the 1980s,when the target of opportunity was AR. The "economic rationalists" among us were quite sure that AR was unsustainable because its cost of production was a major...

Re: Give away: QST July 2012
I had a look at the July QST at my local newsagent (obviously a very cursory look) & was surprised at how little Technical content it had-----lots of nice ads for gear,of course, but 73 had that and Technical content, back in the day,so I always liked it better than QST or CQ. AR compares more tha...

Re: Isotron small HF antennas?
That's why I always find these reviews interesting. The general score was definitely well above average though, and only really lowered by the occasional 1 or 0 out of 5. But then there are those that score it a 5, and even list all the DX they've worked with one... Does this mean those that scored...

They are not highly regarded by the denizens of QRZ.com.
One reference compares them unfavourably to a dummy load!

Sad to hear about Steve.
I had a few conversations with him via e-mail when we were running some Lunar-Link 70cm amps in an ISM application.
Very nice bloke, very helpful,& really knew his stuff.

Re: A question
I agree with the points Iain makes. I was first licensed in 1978 and as far back as I can remember it was common to insert callsign between overs if you wanted to join a group on FM and during an over on SSB as you would be heard and the next person would usually mention someone else was there and ...

Re: FT290R Display
Ron That "red wire bit" is the question always asked as the digital timer counts down to zero as they attempt to defuse the bomb. Or is it the black or blue wire ?? Does that make your FT290R a bomb ?? It always amazes me that bomb makers (in the movies at least) follow a colour coding co...
