Re: ACITRON SSB-400

Hi all, Ken Nisbet is still around...VK2KP...and living in a retirement village on the north side of Sydney. I don't think he is active on air, due to the residential situation. Last time I spoke to him via phone, he had basically decided not to operate, lest TVI etc be caused. But, I'm sure if you ...

Re: Quarter wave stub bandpass plot

Hi Guys,

Last time I looked, Times Microwave LMR-400-75 was available from Rojone..as well as the correct connectors ( but keep it away from your 50 ohm cables...causes all sorts of interesting problems till you realise you have mixed the two...don't ask how I know ).

Re: cut a smooth round hole in front panel

Hi Peter, I use a set of hydraulic hole punches...we used to have a set at work years ago, and I recently saw a set on ePay...hand operated pump, and multiple punches from about 10mm through to about 70mm. They easily punch Ally and then steel. The set was about $200 from memory ( Chinese of course,...

Re: Catalyst about Mobile Telephones

Whatever happened to common sense ? Who in the right mind would place a mobile phone inside their bra, or within inches of the " old fella " ? I think the biggest problem with mobile phones is an almost complete lack of understanding of exactly what it is, and how it works ! Sure, most on ...

Re: VK4 Tower Regs

Hmm, I have mixed feelings about this....yes, we should all strive to get along. I have put up with the Guy on the corner who runs an Aircon business out of his garage, with crap all over the footpath, the Guy across the road and up three houses who runs a panel beating business in front of his gara...

Hi Brendan, There are some real nutcases out there..one of the prospective purchasers next door " knew all about radio "..." Gets into Wi Fi, TV " etc, etc. My WiFi and TV work fine, and in 22 years I have never had a complaint, and I run the legal limit when required. I followed...

Re: VK4 Tower Regs

My initial post was to provide some recent info re VK4 as per the Qld Building Code. The house next door was recently sold...new neighbours are moving in as I type this. I am of the opinion that they made the complaint, even before moving in ! There was also a prospective purchaser who actually aske...

VK4 Tower Regs

I had a visit two days before Christmas from the local Council ( Fraser Coast Regional Council ), in the form of one of their compliance Officers. I was out at the time, but my mother was told that there had been a complaint about my Mast. She informed him that this was a surprise, as the thing had ...

Re: IC706 MK2 G FAULT

George, From memory there is a clip on the LHS of the board that holds a TO220 flat pack to the chassis...it needs to be slipped off, and yep...some force can be required to break the board free, especially if the rubber pads have gone" off "....you can place a tool made up of a right angl...

Re: Where has VI1ANZAC gone?

VI4ANZAC is presently on air, from the 12th to the 20th of December, commemorating the RAN Bridging Train, who were the last ANZAC's out of Gallipoli. Bands in use and frequencies can be found on the VI4ANZAC QRZ.com page.

Re: IC706 MK2 G FAULT

G'Day Alan, It is a very common problem with the IC706....why the corrosion forms is a bit of a mystery, but if you don't get to it early, it can be a real mess to fix. In my opinion, EVERY 706 Owner should lift that board, and have a look underneath...and probably dump that rubber spacer for someth...

Re: IC706 MK2 G FAULT

Hi Allan,

Lift up the PLL board and have a look underneath....you will probably find the tracks corroded near one of two rubber spacers...VERY common problem that causes the symptoms you mentioned.

Re: Opinions on the FT-857D

Not only the filters...both the 857 and the 897 ( basically the same thing in a bigger box ) are exhibiting the same fault in that they will not power up. It is a design weakness in the power on circuit, where several SMC diodes can fail probably due to a current surge at the point of switch on. It ...

Hi Guys,

I won't be around this " 23 on 23 " as the new box is still to be finished...due to delays with a lower band Amp that is slowing me down a tad. But...should be around next month !

Hi Doug, For your info, if you don't already know, the 1296 Beacon is audible in Hervey Bay 99.5% of the time....vary rarely does it disappear, and the JT65 tones are the most noticeable if things are a bit weak...and it is spot on frequency !! ( Rubidium or GPSDO locked here, depending on how I fee...

Re: 10 GHz dish pointing arrangements for portable use

Hi Chaps, I think from memory, Google Earth bearings are True...take off the local Variation ( 11 Deg good enough for around here ) to get Magnetic, then apply Deviation if you have a deviation card for the compass you are using...and hey presto..A Magnetic bearing !. From my days of hurtling around...
