Re: Solar Cycle 25...how old will u be?

I'll be just reaching my official use-by date in the military (yes - 60!) but hopefully still getting better run times in the Basic Fitness Test than some of the recruits...assuming my knees don't get worse...my back doesn't give out...my glasses don't fall off... If the Army doesn't want me any lon...

Re: Trans-Tasman Low-Bands Challenge 2016

Alan, I was quite surprised at being able to operate on 160m at all myself. I used a doublet cut for 80m, so I would assume that my open wire feed line was doing more than a little radiating - fortunately all outside the "shack"! In this regard, I would imagine my antenna would have worked...

Re: Trans-Tasman Low-Bands Challenge 2016

That was a great little contest last night. The impressive thing was the number of stations involved on both SSB and CW...and there were some BIG scores getting around. It was great to have 80m firing (even heard a wood-pecker!) and then to have some really strong signals on the Top Band. Congratula...

Re: Harry Angel 80m Sprint Contest

Well, that was a great little contest session! Conditions were excellent from here in Singleton with few static crashes until right at the end. What I found really encouraging was the number of operators on both phone and CW. Congratulations to all, but particularly to Dr Kevin - whose hard work now...

Can't wait to get started in Harry Angel tonight. Seeing I'll be operating from my base Chapel - I'm sure there will be a little help from the Angel himself! :D

Re: The future for amateur radio in VK

L & Gs, the reason we have a multi-tier licence system was to: (a) get people into the hobby with a basic level of technical knowledge - the Foundation Licence; (b) let them develop their expertise and knowledge - the Standard Licence; and (c) when having reached a higher knowledge and skill lev...

Re: QRP Hours contest 9th April -2016

Noticed not so many other contesters this year although the high noise might have contributed to the lack hearing more distant stations, only heard one VK5 op. So ended my QRP hours contest which for me was a bit of non event. It appears my camping tables have become a bit worn and wobbly in the hi...

Re: Re-radiation from antennas?

A friend of mine years ago who had worked with high power MF broadcast stations told me the story about some blokes digging holes for a fence (if I remember correctly) near an antenna and transmitter similar to the Bald Hills instilation. They had a crowbar in the ground, poured water around the gro...

Forecast for the Hunter Region looks good - possible showers on Friday (no worries!) fine, cool and cloudy on Saturday (couldn't want better wx), and the possibility of rain on Sunday (but, after we've finished up). Sure wins hands-down over last year's storms in SEQ!

Re: Wyong Field Day 2016 - Impressions

Well, this was my first time attending Wyong. A work posting down in NSW made it possible to get here this year. My reflections: 1. It wasn't as big as I thought it would be. 2. Folks - you've just got to have coffee available as soon as you open the gates! Waiting until 0900h was difficult with my ...

Re: Catalyst about Mobile Telephones

Personally, I think everyone needs to take a cold shower and chill out. Yes, there will always be concerns with RF - we know that as radio amateurs - and so, the message to take away is to be careful. In other words, keeping phone use to a necessary minimum and realising that putting it in your pock...

Re: John Moyle Fild Day, March 19-20, 2016

Well this year I won't be with my beloved Redcliffe Club for the John Moyle - coming back from Singleton for the weekend really should involve staying at home and attending my wife, not giving her a peck on the cheek and rushing off to Murrenbong. Bad juju! Anyway, I will be operating portable from ...
