Re: pre amps for 2m pre amp or LNA
Steve, have a look at Wimo http://wimo.com/mast-preamplifier_e.html#mastvorverstaerker The Mini 2 and Mini 70 offer reasonable performance at reasonable cost. Certainly better performance and prices than a 2nd hand Icom masthead LNA. You won't lose money on either of these units if you get the bug a...

Re: Wouxun KG-UV920P fix finally here. Maybe.
Time to pull my finger out and do this repair. OK1DX has a nice solution for those wishing to replace the driver FET at home: http://ok1dx.cz/constructions/uv920p/uv920p.html Note that what's underneath the board may vary depending on the version of the radio, but the screwed-down extra heatsinking ...

Re: QYT KT-8900R
OK, I've bitten the bullet and ordered one of these and a programming cable. Both were considerably cheaper from Aliexpress than eBay. Note that the KT-8900R is different to the older (and still more common) KT-8900. The "R" has a single row of buttons below the display and a cooling fan o...

Re: QYT KT-8900R
Interested in how these things go. I figure that so long is the RX is at least on par with the handheld I currently run in the car (with external dualband antenna), then it looks like reasonable value. Don't really want to leave anything too expensive permanently in the car in case some junkie pinch...

This was very definitely troppo. And I was at Albert Park back then. We used to also get MASSIVE FM BC troppo across Bass Strait too.

Re: Inland Troppo Propagation 2M
Hi Alan, interesting observations, in the last week or two, Leigh VK2KRR and I have made numerous 10M WSPR contacts during the night (324Km), not sure of the mode, could be tropo. - David VK3KCX Hi David, I often get Leigh on 10m, most probably on AE, but I have had 10m troppo into western Vic on s...

Re: Inland Troppo Propagation 2M
I started chasing winter inland troppo back in the 80's as a youngster at while at Uni in Ballarat. I'd actually first experienced it on 27megs AM in the late 70's. Not many people around late at night, but even with just a crappy slim jim vertical, I was able to regularly key repeaters right up the...

Re: Cheap Rotator Control Cable ?
Alarm cable works nicely. I scored several boxes of runs left over from commercial jobs a few years ago, and have used that since then. I had some trailer cable, but it was just too fat and heavy to work with, unless you need a 50m+ run.

Re: Windows 10 and digimode programs
Just do it and upgrade. Win7 has become a very fat old dog, ready for the retirement village. I cringe when I hear other Hams proudly boasting that they're still running XP or even '98. I thought we were a hobby all about technical innovation..... I've run up Win 10 on everything here, as well as mo...

Re: SMPS, which would you recomend
Peter, I would recommend the Manson SPS-8400 SMPS or the SPS9400 if you prefer digital metering. Personally I favour the analogue meter version as I like to watch the meters moving - it can give you some indication of what is happening, especially with SSB. The fan noise is low. The particular adva...

Good luck,

Even 2 elements and SSB on 2m will give you regular contacts into VK2, VK5 and VK7, and farther afield in summer.

Back on topic..... Rather timely thread. I've finally got around to pulling my V360 out with the intention of having it running in the next few months, spare time allowing. Peter, I'd be interested in pics/explanation of where and how you set things up for 25w input. Looking at things, it seems pret...

Re: Aligning a Rotator
How it was explained to me when I initially set up the tracking software with the AZ/EL rotators is the antennas should be aligned to magnetic north and once your longitude and latitude is input into the tracking software any required correction is made. ......... Got it, line them up to mag north ...

Re: Aligning a Rotator
THIS!!! Hi Compton, To keep the answer short, the software will be referencing True North. For a bit more of an explanation: Magnetic north is variable depending where you are located on the surface of the Earth - it is simply the direction that a magnetic compass will align. The earths magnetic fie...
