Re: Exam / Licence Price & Young People ..
This has been a most interesting thread to read. I'd like to offer my viewpoint on young people's interest in Amateur Radio based on my experience. I have two boys who are now sixteen and eleven. Growing up they've seen Dad's radios at home, in the car and portable with the subsequent antennas and c...

Re: Amatuer Radio Related Things in Japan/Toyko?
Hi Jayson, I had a few hours to spare in Electric Town a few years ago between flights. I arrived by train from Narita airport and somewhere very close to the train station was a huge underground market stall area with literally hundreds of tables of electronic and electrical gear. There were cables...

Re: Echolink via Notebook
Echolink works fine on my iPhone 4 with Optus in Oz and numberous other carriers in China, Thailand, Malaysia plus a few other places. Also works great on my galaxy s3 on vodafone Of course to make things easy I use a Blackberry for which there is no Echolink app! I can do without the Echolink. Can...

Re: Echolink via Notebook
Thanks for all the replies. I thought the ports would be tied up by Telstra particularly when it comes to Pre Paid. I regularly travel to Italy and always use an USB dongle from one their carriers. I was hoping that testing out Echolink here with a Telstra dongle might help with getting it set up ov...

Re: Echolink via Notebook
That USB dongle is natures way of letting you know that Echolink is not ham radio. Just use skype!!! Already use Skype for non amateur friends. I'm talking about connecting to a node to join a weekly net on 2m. I appreciate it's not for everyone but it works for me and the rest of the Ech...

Echolink via Notebook
I am having problems connecting to Echolink on my notebook using a USB Pre Paid Dongle. The problem is that it simply won't connect to the Echolink servers. I have it running just fine on an iPod Touch through my home router and it runs smoothly. This took some tinkering with Port Forwarding on an o...

Re: Choices for a broad band VHF UHF receiver
I would echo the comments about the R7000. I have one and find its sensitivity to be excellent for such an old receiver. In my opinion it is better than a Uniden 780xlt or 996xt both of which I have and which do a an excellent job as well. I just feel that the R7000 has better reception and sounds b...

I presume the suggestion refers to local i.e. Australian amateurs. In the case of DX I would think it helps and is still being well used by amateurs overseas.

Re: Are you talking to aliens?
I sometimes say that I can't discuss it with civilians.
I think most people like to pigeon hole the hobby as CB or SWL which they can relate to easily but I explain the gaping difference. It doesn't always work but it it goes some way.

Re: Computer- Radio connection
Darren, What software are you using? I have a VX7R and use Commander software from: http://www.kc8unj.com/vx7.html and it works a treat. I note there is a version for the VX5. I have used the official ADMS software years ago and seemed to recall having some communication issues with programming. Wor...

Any chanced you could try this on another computer? Are there any issues with the version of the operating system you are using?

Re: Dick Smith Electronics In Trouble?
Well put Richard. I think you could add car stereo and general electronic tinkering as a hobby to the reasons the old DS grew. Dick was in the right place at the right time and got out at the right time. I think with respect to gen Y it has become the norm to simply buy an electical unit off the she...

Re: New Kenwood Super at dayton 2012 [pre release]
Apparently it's real and will be in production some time soon according to some of the other forums. One quotes a price of around USD5200 for it.
I guess if Kenwood show it off at Dayton next week then that will confirm it.

Rob, with respect to your point about the possible devolution of radio etiquette I appreciate the point you are making but feel that there is not much to do about it other than raise it for discussion, and to maintain your stance which I expect you will. It's a healthy discussion to have and perhaps...

Thanks Rob. I actually have a copy of the 2010 issue and have never thought to look this up.
Goes to show what good it does collecting dust on the shelf.
Thanks once again. Don't follow AFL but don't have to agree with your view!

Re: OLD TV
I've always been interested in what application a CRO has in Amateur Radio. I know it has some applications and in the hands of the knowledgeable probably quite a lot of applications but I have not come across an article or knowledge base that applies to amateur radio. At the risk of being flamed I ...

Re: Hams encourage F Calls to run more power ?
Hi Tim, Not always heard as readily as others using higher power though I am not concerned about it considering where I am located. I have a Cushcraft 13 element 2m beam in very ordinary condition which I have been slowly restoring back to life and is now close to ready. Just earlier this week I pic...

Re: Hams encourage F Calls to run more power ?
I'm aware I can use 2m SSB. I can hear quite a bit and would like to converse however I am not often heard on my power rating which is one incentive for me to upgrade. I'm a Newsagent with two shops and two young harmonics below 10 years old. For me it's early morning prior to 4am or late after 9pm ...

Re: Hams encourage F Calls to run more power ?
I would love to upgrade to Standard (and may even have a go at Advanced!) however time is against me in my chosen line of work and getting time away from family & business is a challenge I just can't overcome at the moment. I know that many will have the opinion that that is no excuse after havi...
