I presume the suggestion refers to local i.e. Australian amateurs. In the case of DX I would think it helps and is still being well used by amateurs overseas.

I sometimes say that I can't discuss it with civilians.

I think most people like to pigeon hole the hobby as CB or SWL which they can relate to easily but I explain the gaping difference. It doesn't always work but it it goes some way.
