Re: Running costs VK3RRU
When looking for Meteor Scatter or airplane, a constant beacon is a must.
Drop the power. Or, go solar.
Used solar panels, panels with ground leakage or corrosion are becoming common.
We use them for low voltage, so no problem.

BMARC also operated from a fixed location, location of a quadriplegic amateur Andrew VK2XPT.
We were portable in that we erected a rotated pole and 6,2,70 and 23 at his place.
He has only 2 & 70 on a vertical. East Blaxland.

All these guys do PCBs.
Can I use, say copper shim over a perspex sheet and clamp it down with thicker perspex sheet
over the top?
Perspex was used a lot back in the 288 days.

DMR, because WICEN are interested.
Why are DMR and Codec2 not included in the vote question?
DMR can support two talk groups on the one frequency.
That's the BIG advantage of DMR.

New laptop required.
Go for a Low Power motherboard in a desktop:
AMD: ASRock QC5000/ITX
Intel: ASRock Q1900-ITX
Both in use here to keep the 24x7 power bill down.
(Linux of course)

Bend up your own. The only reason for thick copper is rigidity. Kitchen alfoil is all that is needed from an RF perspective. House damp course flashing is dead easy to work with for horns etc.. Have a look at Bunno's. My 3.3GHz horns worked a treat for Unwired (3.3GHz Navini Networks Internet, pre W...

Adelaide is where fiberglass rod is manufactured, Look for VROD Australia. Fiberglass reo-bar for concrete. Perhaps you can get somebody to build it for you, there in Adelaide. The centre spider ( or ant, spiders have 8 legs) is easy, get some 25mm angle and bent bolts to clamp the rod in the V of t...

Re: Looking for tolerant low signal digital mode
Meteor pings are often very short, under 1/2 sec. So, a fast bit rate mode is needed to get a "packet" through. On 6m, we tried FSK315 but the gut feel was, FSK441 was better. But, the bigger problem is, few people are running the latest software. Here, I download and compile WSJT and WSJT...

Short Backfire Antenna (SBF) Here is a publication that explains it all: http://www.collectionscanada.ca/obj/s4/f2/dsk3/ftp04/NQ56152.pd f Start at page 136 And, they build a 2x2 array of them. Yes, they use waveguide feed, but the crossed dipoles wotk, just the same. We at BMARC have 50m of 1/4&qu...
