Vanuatu - Cyclone Harold
Our Pacific neighbour, Vanuatu, is currently being threatened by Cyclone Harold. At the time of writing it was a Cat 4 but was spinning up to Cat 5. The current projections have it passing, very slowly, across the centre of the island chain in the next day or so. Most notably Esprititu Santo, Ambrym...

Re: Kings Generators
Hi Hayden,
Sadly no further radio tests.
My HF stuff has been boxed up due to interference from many things but especially FTTC NBN.

Re: Kings Generators
After the storm here on Tuesday we were without power until the wee small hours of Thursday. Needless to say, the generator got pressed into service and did sterling service. I found that I could run an upright freezer, two full size fridges and charge various batteries all at once. The trick was to...

Kings Generators
Hi All, The generator I have (a 2kVA chinese thing) has developed an oil leak. Just spent an hour taking the covers off. I reckon there's another hour getting the engine shrouds off before I can even begin to look for the oil leak. It looks like I can get a Kings 2kVA for about $450 or a 3kVA for ab...

Re: Oricom Radios
Many thanks.
Pretty much what it is used for currently, so given the price I might grab one.
Oh, one question, does it have a manual Squelch/mute or the stoopid auto mute like the Uniden?

Oricom Radios
Hi All,
I need to replace the ageing UHF (477 MHz) CB in the ute.
It has been many years since I have looked into that space. Has anyone had any experience with the Oricom range of equipment?
Any opinions?

GPS Epoch Rollover
The GPS seems to have it's very own Y2K moment coming up on Sunday as the 1024 possible week numbers exhaust. https://www.abc.net.au/news/science/2019-04-05/gps-rollover-global-positioning-system-receivers-satellites/10966218 It will be interesting to see if any of my older units a) run up and b) st...

Re: VK5 Microwave Road Trip
I am not a Facebook user so I can't really comment on it's usefulness or otherwise, I find youtube as a 'learning tool' to be almost useless. The basis of my dislike is the interminable scrolling through poorly filmed, poorly narrated, poorly storybooked and poorly lit videos to find that one nugget...

I copied and pasted the original text. Does this work?

(It works for me but that is probably not a great test)

Re: The WIA and Google Suite
I received this from Aidan Mountford on behalf of the WIA President (I had emailed the Prez directly on this matter). I make no comment as I am yet to digest what this means: Colin, I apologise if there has been any miscommunication - I will review this communication with the IT group. With respect ...

Re: The WIA and Google Suite
Hi Lou, It seems the WIA have engaged what appears to be an external 'concierge' service to handle email comms - this suggests that their IT services are being outsourced. Thus the qualification of business use for google suite. It seems a weird choice to provide these 'services'. Maybe they are try...

The WIA and Google Suite
A couple of weeks ago I received an email from the WIA indicating that they would be moving their email redirection service to a Google service. For those who are unaware, the WIA has provided a service where members of the WIA could get a @wia.org.au email address that forwarded mail to the users a...

Re: An Unexpected Outcome of FT-8
I. Give. Up.
I tried to inject a little positivity but the nay-sayers just have to hi-jack and have a whinge about a completely different subject. No wonder potential new-comers get turned off the hobby. Mostly by old whiny men and 1930's club meeting mentalities.
Well you win.
C'est Fini.

An Unexpected Outcome of FT-8
Well despite what the haters have said, I have quite enjoyed playing around with FT-8 over the last few months. At the very least it has got me back on the air. There has been an unexpected upside. QSL Cards. Using FT-8 I have been able to make contacts into places I have never been able to before. ...

Re: Is this for real?
I am not sure what AMC's business model is. The invigilators are independent of the training organisations, and I believe (but don't know) they generally come from boating and sailing clubs, etc. so they may or may not be paid. A marine operators exam is $89 per http://www.amc.edu.au/industry/omc/om...
