Re: Fishing rod for mobile whip
Try your local tip shop for old 27mhz antennas. I found one about 7 ft long for $5. It will eventually go on top of a 3 ft copper mast, and I will go with interchangeable loading coils . See this article: http://www.qsl.net/k5lxp/mobile/HFMast/HFMast.html and this site: http://www.k0bg.com/ Have fun...

Gday Matt . I found this article helpful ,and also the links at the bottom of the article. http://hf-antenna.com/schart/ There are plenty of free Smith chart programs around ,use your search engine. The chart is a tool to help you visualize and plot what is happening along the transmission line ,Not...

Brendan. :D I was hoping you would take that in the manner intended. Now there is another thread on the same subject (EMR - again). Seems to be the hot topic at the moment. I saw an interesting flyer posted on a community notice board today . It listed all the dangers of those "smart meters&qu...

Re: Help Understanding EMR
The ACMA are making the point that ALL stations that have ANY part of the antenna below 10m are by definition non-compliant. Wayne that is just wrong. You should read and understand this: http://www.wia.org.au/members/technical/emr/ and further info: http://www.wia.org.au/licenses/licensing/rfpower...

Re: Any Known Issues With The Yaesu FT757GX & Icom 718
Gday Andrew. I have had my 718 for a few years now. I purchased it second hand . The only issue I have had ,is the Audio gain control is a bit touchy . When I have It turned down low ,and then turn it up a little there is a sudden jump in volume level. I have taken the radio apart to try to fix or c...

Re: How do you explain what ham radio is?
How about something like this: Amateur radio is an electronics based hobby with an emphasis on radio communications. We use our Radio station to listen to and communicate with other Amateurs We do this on special radio frequencies set aside by the government for the purpose. "Like CB radio ?&qu...

Re: Bone of contention
A short story. A few years ago ,I got my F call. I purchased a cheap kenwood ts130s. I got on air and was told I had RF feedback ,poor audio etc etc. So after trying all the well meaning advice, I was just about to give up and sell the thing on e-bay! One night while testing my latest attempt at red...

Re: Is it illegal?
Nope . I could not find the part which states that you cannot communicate with another ham, whom is transmitting on a band or mode that is not permitted to be used under their licence conditions. eg f call tx on 20m using digital modes. Do we put this one with? : F calls cant use echo-link/IRLP F Ca...

Re: Amateur gear out of band - illegal?
Gday guys. However, I'm not sure how you work out the ACMA "let them in", ie. imports of these radios. I believe the ACMA has the power to make importing wideband tx radios illegal. Maybe they dont? Perhaps owning a radio capable of wide band tx is not illegal? When they were made a...

Re: Amateur gear out of band - illegal?
Hey Guys. In the last 2 years I have met 3 non amateurs who owned a cheap Chinese hand held. They were all using them as scanners. One guy used his mainly as a scanner, but also used it on larger job-sites to communicate with his work partner. When I asked him what frequencies he used for that, he jus...

1. A Non Resonant antenna does not radiate as well as a resonant antenna.
2. You always lose a lot of power in an ATU
3. DX worked means the antenna system is efficient.

Re: TV antenna
Gday The Station master is an end fed antenna. As such the needed"counterpoise" for the antenna is the coax and metal mast. They will have significant amounts of RF on them when transmitting. Whether this causes TVI is unknown ,but I would wager that it would. The rf from the station maste...
