Re: Come for a climb up THIS tower

The obvious piece of safety gear on a tower at these altitudes would be a parachute ! It might actually have time to open and arrest a fall, avoiding entanglement issues of course. You would certainly want to be paying attention to weather and wind forecasts for a climb like that.

Re: Tower approvals in VK3?

Hi Andy, The case in question is; Maciszewski v Casey CC [2003] VCAT 402 (10 April 2003) It is the comments from the magistrate in summing up that set the precedent; "DOES THE RESTRICTIVE COVENANT PREVENT THE ERECTION OF THIS RADIO MAST? 38. Although under different legislation, which contains ...

Re: ARRL "Optomized" 6 m Yagi Designs.

I agree with Ross ZL3ADT, After much investigation, I would look at one of Justin's designs. I intend to build the 7el which stacks up very favourably with the M2 6M7JHV without all of the potential matching issues. The G0KSC designs show good bandwidth, gain, F/B that does not seem to be achievable...

Re: ZL8X - Kermadec Island 6m operation 19 Nov 2010

Hi Scott,

Thanks for the heads up. I have just emailed them to let them know that there will be a lot of VK's listening,
and given the time of year they should get plenty of contacts on 6.

Re: Ex-Commercial Radios On 6m ?

Hi Jason, I have had success with a Kenwood TK-630H, this is a low band VHF commercial box with the special tune banding which allows it to oerate on 50MHz. The RF deck is a solid brick, with a rating of 110W. These can be configured with a local head or a basic 99ch numeric only remote head, or a 1...

I know something.

Re: New 6m LFA Yagi

Rob, The little LFA looks good, I'm thinking something similar might make a good field day antenna. The other option with your PVC mast would be to reinforce it by sliding a big wooden dowel up the centre, our local bunnings sells these up to about 40mm in diameter. A quick coat of varnish to seal i...

Re: rohde and schwarz spec an crt p/supply

Hi Mark, One of our techs suggested that you may find a substitute transformer in the horizontal deflection circuits of an old Black and White TV, although he thinks that the output voltages may be higher than 2400 V. His thoughts are that this voltage will be fairly critical in the circuit and ther...

Dave,

Clearly the problem is the lack of a proper termination after the Polarisation change !

More good news Bob, well done, P29 ops have been a bit thin on the ground, so having a second operator
there for a while should stir up some interest.

Re: Backscatter Radar

David,

It's great that you have isolated the source of the spurious, and that it is not the 706. Hopefully we can arrange another test
when you Andrew and I are all available for more comparison. Andrew let me know when you wish to run another test.

Re: rohde and schwarz spec an crt p/supply

Hi Mark,

I am wondering if you could substitute the transformer from other "similar" gear ie old CRO's or the like.
I will ask our techs at work on Thursday when I see them if they know of a likely source.

Hi all,

Zeljko YJ0MM was in here this afternoon around 05:15z and worked by quite a few VK3's and others,
so he is certainly active, a good operator too, so keep an ear out.

Re: New /M 2m antenna, lots of 'flutter'... any ideas?

Hi Rob, I agree with David VK3AUU, in that the higher gain and flattened radiation pattern of the bigger antenna combined with the increased flexing due to it's length, causing that flattened patern to rise and fall is probably the culprit. I have experienced similar using an X 500 base station ante...

Re: Wideband FM 50.100MHz... any ideas what?

Hi Rob, Unfortunately some of the non approved stuff does get in. There was a case recently in Melbourne of a cordless telephone using frequencies in the 2 metre band, needless to say, it got out very well but was tracked down very quickly. Let me know how you go finding your 6mx source, and likewis...

Congratulations Andrew !

I have been eagerly awaiting the results of your FFT results of the tests conducted with David.

This could revolutionise the way we analyze band propagation, its a pity I am too close to you to help in the testing.

Rob,

Even though this post is old I just saw it and thought you could have added that you are a shift worker and don't appreciate being awakened by oversized possums
slam dancing in your roof cavity after pulling an all night shift, that might make them think twice !

I think Iain hit the nail on the head, it is the starting point for the real learning process. Whatever the level of the exam, there will be those that argue that it is too easy or too hard. Ultimately it is the formality that entitles an individual to get their certificate, and then begin the real ...
