Re: 23-on-23 - building activity

Hey Steve,

You mentioned above 3000 km on 144 to ZL.

Who did you work?

Thanks

Steve

Re: VK Maritime Mobile

Hi KJ all, My take from over here in ZL is we currently have 12 nautical miles (22.2 km) out to see and is called Territorial waters. So I would assume our licence is valid out to that distance. The territorial sea is regarded as the sovereign territory of the state under the 1982 United nations con...

Hey Wayne don't worry about it too much and best not to challenge someone. Let every one have their say.

Re: Inland Troppo Propagation 2M

Over here in ZL get similar tropo openings and from memory often around June! They are overland and of a short distance like say 500 km. I spent 10 odd years beaming south ZL listening for the Wellington 144.275 beacon 500 km distance. Of note it is perched up at 300 m ABSL and I am at sea level. Wh...

And If the person or new pending licensee does not pass the test there is no fee.
Or as Bob said only a $5 dollar cost.
A minimal amount so to speak, if none at all.

Re: The future for amateur radio in VK

The 1 k/W was asked for via remit NZART conference 2010. He was given later with no problems. A couple of bands are limited like 925 MHz and we are currently limited slightly 50 to 51 MHz but that will change soon. And over here we don't pay a yearly licence fee. Its currently free for life. I'm cur...

Re: The future for amateur radio in VK

My thinking with a hard carrier down (lets say 1000 watts on the bird) is basically the same as a (very firm) whistle into the microphone. Both are 1000 watts PEP. If SSB or voice, in general that is, is pushed harder it will exceed the 1000 watt PEP but not by much. It amazes me why over in VK you ...

Re: In-line joining of coax

Hi Colin, This is my input of how to join. I'm reading you just want to join together, rather than upgrading. Trim up both ends ready to butt together for joining and then solder the two inners together. Then join the two outers together by rapping around some aluminium tape or maybe some aluminium ...

Thanks Ian,
For all the years knew Ted never asked him how he got the dish onto his property. I'm sure the dish, from memory, came from Wellington but I could be wrong.

Re: Hullo + fyi

Ted had the RF gear mounted in the rear hub of this dish. Down inside the shed, or at the top of the shed as you walked in, was the big cog. Worked Ted many times on 1296 and 2.4 GHz terrestrial. With 1296 EME he worked a few of recent - before his sad passing. On 1296 EME 2.4 meter dish and 150 wat...

Re: A 3.4GHz "Soup Can" feed

I may have shown this before but I'm great believer in keep it simple like a Soup can or in my case a waveguide flange.
Of notes local hardware over here sell these fibre glass rod. So with a touch of glue solid and hopefully centred.

Re: Satellites and Foundation licence

Hi Wayne, Good point and worthy of promoting... We get the odd F call across to ZL on 144 tropo and you can tell they are running 10 watts. Not big signals - but easily heard. I remember one from VK2 and another recently from VK4. They are sort after and to be honest put a good signal into ZL. It ma...

Re: Normal yagi vs loop yagi on 23cm

A good rule of thumb I use Roger: If you have a noticeable increase is SNR call it 3 dB. If for example you can hardly notice or feel slightly better (just) make it 1 dB. I think you will find the human ear can just detect 1 dB. A loop yagi with only 5 or 6 elements will have more gain that a yagi o...

Hi Roger,
I'm curious - which design of loop yagi are you using. Or another way to put that, what publication is the design from?
Cheers, Steve,
PS impressive set up and comparison test I must admit :)
