Re: Identifying FM Es stations
Just remembered, another way of checking is online streaming of a suspected station, or their online playlists (Now playing...). But I can go to digitalradioplus.com.au and stream the capital city ABCs (and others) which would also confirm if a particular program was from an RN or ABC local radio in...

Identifying FM Es stations
Prompted by a question asked by VK3ZAZ in the iChat this afternoon (he had left by the time I got back from dinner) I thought I would answer some questions as an FM DXer. 08:04:41 VK3ZAZ VK2FEAE I am curious as an ABC tech how you know what si what, for one callsigns are not given and man multi use ...

Re: Operation on 88-108mhz FM band
It is no different to those companies (and some country councils are shockers...) who use license free 2.4GHzish spread spectrum links designed for short hop office to office links on broadcast sites to give them a very cheap microwave link. Hi Richard As someone who has worked in this industry for...

Re: A New Model of VHF Sporadic E Propagation
On 30 December 2009, Richard VK2SWL2, of Numeralla NSW, posted a report on a Forum here about the reception of TNQ7 Townsville. You can read it here: ttp://www.vklogger.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8940. Scroll down the page to where Richard posted a Brisbane ionogram. Richard recently confirm...

Re: Effects of the volcanic ash cloud on radio sigs
My work involves setting up both class licence (2.4, 5.8, 24, 70 GHz) as well as licenced microwave from 8 to 23 GHz. Had the dust storms last year in Sydney dropped any links of ours I would have heard about it, so either attenuation from the Sydney dust storms was minimal or we had enough fade mar...

Re: Cheap Rotator Cable
I recently helped VK2/SWL1 put up his mast and rotator after he moved house. Went to the radio place at Blacktown whose name escapes me but they had run out of rotator cable. We also looked at trailer cable but that wasn't a cheap option either for the aprox 30m we needed. I had doubts over Cat5 or ...

Re: Do fires effect UHF signals?
A somewhat higher frequency, but where I was working in early 2007 we distributed a couple of different brands of licenced microwaves. One of our customers was based in Sale VIC, and had quite a few 13 GHz links around the area. I don't know the details of the links involved, except being 13 GHz the...

Re: SSSP Multi es F2?
Purely to add to the discussion and not promoting any theories here, late this morning there was quite a high MUF open from Numeralla in southern NSW to Queensland, extending all the way to TV Channel 7. The closest ionogram to the midpath is Brisbane, and I noticed a very smeary look to it for want...

Re: Choice of cables for serious antenna systems
True enough Richard, which is why I mentioned that 95% of the time we aren't trying to scrape every last dB out of a link. I guess the obsession with dB is because we are designing the link properly, plus doing the calculations that show what we should get in theory are a nice backup to knowing it i...

Re: Choice of cables for serious antenna systems
At the risk of getting my head bitten off as I'm not an amateur operator, I will approach this from my job as a microwave network engineer. We work with unlicenced products at 900 MHz, 2.4, 5.4 & 5.8 GHz (as well as licenced microwave, but in that case the radio goes directly on to the back of t...

Re: Earth Steak
Just to add a bit of technical knowledge to the discussion, a few years ago I had a long discussion with an engineer in the USA from one of our suppliers. My job involves working with licenced (6-70 GHz) and unlicenced (2.4 and 5.8 GHz) links on rooftops etc. We had a bit of a problem with a certain...

Re: South Pacific Multiple SpE
Thanks Roger Given that February is a bit after the peak of the Es season it gives hope that during December/January even better things might be possible. It would probably be a frustrating excercise to try it unless you happened to hit a good year and some luck. But still, nothing ventured, nothing...

South Pacific Multiple SpE
Hi everyone, a non ham related question but the 6 metre enthusiasts will be best placed to answer this one. Given some amazing recent recent 3 Es FM band reception from Ireland to North America the questions have been asked in the forum we generally use about what would be possible from Australia at...

Re: USA FM heard in Ireland
Thanks Adam and Bob.
I didn't expect it to be a world record on 6 metres, though it may well be on broadcast band FM. I was just curious what TA 6 metres loggings might have to been happening at the same time.
I will have a look at the Great Circle software.
Cheers, Richard

USA FM heard in Ireland
There appears to have been some pretty amazing Es reception in the last couple of days from DXer Paul Logan in Ireland hearing a number of USA FM stations at distances over 5000km, including an almost certain reception of WVAS Montgomery AL at an amazing distance of about 6400km. Given this, is anyo...

Echoes of Apollo
I came across this in a newsletter from the Overseas Telecommunications Veterans Association newsletter (I used to work for OTC though hopefully don't quite qualify as a "veteran" yet!). Thought it might be of interest to those into EME. This year is the 40th anniversary of the Apollo moon...

Re: Bushlan, A newish threat to 6mx ??
Nothing seems to have happened for a while, even their webpages haven't been updated for 10 months with no news reports for ages. Given the NBN rollout plans of 100 Mbps I think the bush would complain about a 100 kbps service. I do remember hearing about it originally, it is sort of related to the ...

Re: The demise of components stores
Better quality components from specialized stores, especially when you want coaxial cable and fittings. Alan. Luckily I get trade pricing from Electrocraft as we use them for work, they give me the same pricing even if buying for myself. About 30% off on telo masts, cable, antennas etc if I need it.

Re: Antenna for 13cm (2403)
OK if anyone is interested I have two of the Pacific Satellite GO903A antennas sitting in my shed. Both a few years old but seem in reasonable condition, certainly good enough for experimenting I would think. The datasheet PDF can be found at www.pacsat.com.au/PACSAT-PDF-FEB06/GO903A-F.pdf Free to g...
