Re: Unusual signals on 40m

A little more info from a YB station who wishes to remain anonymous: You are correct - they are non-amateurs. BUT (and this is where it gets weird) - they ARE homebrewers! They are running variants of the Indian BITX low cost transceiver design, followed by individually-designed linear amplifiers ba...

Re: Unusual signals on 40m

Top marks to those that correctly identified the language as Bahasa (Indonesian). It has been going on for years. It is partly nonlicenced "inter-island radio", and partly licenced amateurs. The shouting game (called "Lollo", apparently) is mostly licenced amateurs. An umpire lis...

Re: Icom IC-718 receive problem

The trick with running paper through the contacts on the relay(s) likely won't work, as they are tiny little sealed things. Is the problem worst on only one band? If so, it's likely the relays on the PA filter board, if it's like my old '706 original. Replaced most of the relays in by now, I would t...

Re: Software for calculating feed impedance

MMANA-GAL will probably get you up and going faster. The key is to find a .maa file from somebody else :-) Quite a few ship with the base install, but there are even more in the files section of the Yahoo group. Even if you have to alter the dimensions, height above ground etc. to suit your particul...

Re: Software for calculating feed impedance

If I understand your question correctly, MMANA-GAL will do it. Dunno about a graph plot - maybe it does, but I have not found it yet, being a "baby steps" user of the software still.
Cheers

Never done it, but I cannot help thinking:

is a bit more exciting than a crystal set.
Followed by a "best DX" competition, of course!
Good luck

Re: Free WIN 10 upgrade

Related, but not quite on-topic - has anyone figured out how to stop the annoying "Free upgrade for a limited time" pop-ups?
I am NOT going to upgrade (I get the web via my phone, and W10 would blow my limit for many months to come).
Getting the pop-up every 10 minutes or so....
Thanks

Re: 30m SSB

Ummm, actually, we DO see digi dudes encroaching on the CW sub bands, Robert. Lately, we see a lot of JT65 skeds in the 14050-14060 window, for whatever reason...and PSK31 gradually creeping downwards....and some new mode that has adopted 14067 as it's centre frequency. Don't even get me going about...

Re: IC-730 VFO problem

It will be the optical encoder. Early Icoms are famous for that. Dunno if it is an Icom homebrew job like the 701, 720, 211 & 245 use, or something store-bought like the later rigs used. If homebrew, you can often get it working again with compressed air. If that doesn't work, there are usually ...

Re: Have you recently tried becoming a WIA Exams Assessor?

VK2MUS - Actually, assessors *ARE* obliged to pack around a load of gear. Those of us that did assessor training in a classroom setting had that made abundantly clear. The creators of the program probably had a well-heeled club in mind. Once again, what works in the larger centres doesn't work quite...

Re: Have you recently tried becoming a WIA Exams Assessor?

To get the topic back on track - another option is to become a "learning facilitator", if all you want to do is sit in second seat for a lone assessor. I'm one of those "lone assessors" in the bush, and I rely heavily on LF'ers. The LF'er process is a little weird, but it is defi...

Re: GI-7B amplifier

Actually, on HF, I have seen as much as 550 watts (into a dummy load, of course!) from a single Gi-6b. Pretty much in line with the various US web pages describing conversions. I was probably power supply limited, using the power supply out of my FAA single 4CX250B amplifier. It was groaning pretty ...

A bit light on south of Toowoomba, but easy copy. That's with a 10 element log periodic pointed away from it, though.
Haven't tried getting into it yet.

Re: Which Morse Key?

There has been a massive revival of interest in hand-sent Morse. See www.skccgroup.com. They're about to kick over 13,000 members and growing. If you have any interest in that sort of thing, a pumper makes sense, though many run bugs as well. I use the Czech military key, and am extremely pleased wi...

Don't think you will make many friends with that 10 mtr frequency, Andy. It is the international CW QRP calling frequency, and is heavily used by SOTA operators as well.

Re: Antenna opinions and suggestions (started with Tak-tenna

That's a bit more science than most of us put into it :D 1) First ever experience with a random wire - L shape between 2 street lamp poles (council NOT amused), then back to the house. Couldn't work out why my primitive L network tuner would not bring it in. Disconnected tuner, found out the SWR was...
